Use a catalyzed (two-part) clearcoat, urethane or lacquer. You can get either in very simple and convenient spray cans, on Amazon. Catalyzed finishes are more durable and solvent resistant than simple solvent or acrylic based finishes. The only downside is the contents of the spray can must be used within about 24 hours of activation - anything remaining in the can will cure solid.

    Good luck and safe shooting.

A 692 should get an oil finish instead of some sort of poly or plastic finish. You can get quite a bit of gloss on a properly done oil finish. Bob Day at AmeriChoke in Pico Rivera refinished my old beater Citori duck gun with a very nice gloss oil finish a few years ago and now it's too nice for the blind. Highly recommended if you are willing to ship the gun to So Cal.
