Totally new to trap shooting, have no idea with equipment or beginning practice. Does someone have a suggestion where should start from?

How to Start Trap Shooting

First: get a gun. Almost any shotgun with a 28" or longer barrel will do.
Second: Go to your local range and tell them you are just starting out and would like some instruction.
That's all there is to it. Go out, have fun and be safe."A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed" -
If you're BRAND NEW start watching some youtube videos. Don't take everything to heart with them, but you will start seeing some commonality with them. If you have a shotgun with a 26" barrel and are comfortable with it, try that first when you go the range. Buy some 7 1/2 or 8 shot ammo from Walmart if the price is right. It's worth it for less than $5.50. Otherwise the range you go to will have ammo most likely, but you will probably pay twice the amount compared to Walmart.Originally posted by FjoldI've been married so long that I don't even look both ways when I cross the street.Nothing is so permanent as a temporary government program.

This is a very good video. VERY OLD VIDEO but it shows the fundamentals.

Thank you for both your reply! Any typical model shotgun to recommend? Please don't be too expensive.If you're BRAND NEW start watching some youtube videos. I may need a shell pouch? My local gun range said "RETRIEVING SHELLS FROM A SHELL BOX ON THE GROUND IS NEVER ALLOWED." Besides the gun and ammo and some cash, anything else I need for the first time trap range visit?God created man;

Trap is a single shot game, a simple pump will do. A Remington 870 or Mossberg 500 with a 28" barrel will work. I'd recommend one with choke tubes, a modified is a good starting point.
Given this, yes, a shell pouch is a good idea."A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed"Comment

Well, starting out, you will be at the 16yd line, from there it makes no difference. However, if you really get into it, a 12ga is the way to go, when you get into the handicap distances. But then, if you go that far, you may want a dedicated Trap gun.
Buy which ever you feel comfortable with, chances are it won't be your last shotgun purchase.
Shooting clays is not a cheap sport, in the long run, the gun IS the cheap part.Last edited by ceh383; 12-26-2018, 10:24 PM."A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed"Comment

I wear a vest to hold shells. One pocket for the fresh ones, one for empties. Hard to mess up. Most places I see though will have some kind of stand to rest a box on though, so it's not usually necessary. One added benefit it provides however is that they usually come with some kind of padding on the shoulder, which can be nice.Thank you for both your reply! Any typical model shotgun to recommend? As for your shotgun, I'd say anything over 24" with replaceable chokes. A pump or single shot break action will be fine, provided the barrel measures up to your field's minimum requirements. Look around and it could very well be the cheapest gun you ever buy, not that you can't spend more if you want.Comment

I'd recommend going to Los Altos Rod and Gun. Take whatever shotgun you have that has a barrel longer than 24", bring some target shells and biodegradable clays from Walmart then try it out at the self launch trap area. You can do the E-trap and hopefully you get Bill as the operator, and he will assess your shooting and give you pointers that are Trap gold. Good LuckComment
