Starter shotgun for small kid sized roommate

I looking to pick up a 20 gage for an 18 year old girl that is 4ft 11in and about 80 lbs. My shotguns have to long of a stock & seem front heavy for her.I haven't found any locally but the micro midas seems heavy enough and shorter on both ends with the correct choke is this gun ok for clays shooting. Thanks for reading my post

Weatherby SA08 20G Youth model is nice. My nephew shot one when he was younger. We had him shooting trap/skeet/sporting clays with it. He got his first pheasant with it too.

I'd also look for Rem-1100 Youth models. The 1100 is a soft shooter.

Need to see pictures of said roommate before I can suggest a shotgun.

Tristar has a few youth model semi-autos that I'd recommend.

A semi-auto will recoil less than a pump, and judging by the size of your roommate, she may be recoil sensitive. Especially if she's a newbie.

Sportsman's Whorehouse recently had a sale on a cool looking 2-tone wood version for $299. Unfortunately that sale ended. If you shop around you can find most flavors for around $350.

The nice thing about a wood stocked version is it's usually easier for a gunsmith to shorten the length of pull over a poly stocked version.

The Tristars I've played with seem to be light, reliable, and an inexpensive way to find out if you like shooting shotguns and shotgun games. They also come with replaceable chokes, which some other brands don't.

There are also extended mag tubes that are compatible with the Tristar if she should venture into 3-gun at some point.

                shooting a glock pistol

I found a tristar & a little browning so far without shopping at Dicks, they have a 870 youth model. The tri star would have to come from Davidsons so she can't shoulder it pacific sporting has a browning we can look at.Big 5 is close by hopefully they have a mossberg bantam or another smaller gun in stock.

you'd better teach her a better shooting stance first

I have no idea of your budget

Many semi autos have junk in the stock so shortening it is not a reality

I would look at a clays gun and have the stock shortened and a new recoil pad to fit her.

A nice over under- used would be my starting point.

Light loads from a 20 gauge should be fine with correct shooting technique.
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT
                    (thanks to Jeff Cooper)

                      ><

Go out to Pacific Sporting and get some help with gun fit.

I have two set up for shooters her size..a Browning BPS 20ga and an 870 20ga. Both are "youth" versions and both needed more mods to accommodate small framed shooters.

I use the mod'ed guns with Winchester AA low recoil 20ga and Fiocchi extra low recoil when working with new small framed students

I'd suggest the following semi-auto 20 gauge shotguns with wood stock.

Mossberg International SA-20 Youth Bantam #75793
Tristar Viper G2 Youth Wood 20 gauge
                        Remington Model 1100 20 gauge
Winchester Super X3 Field Compact 20 gauge

                        Hope this helps.

A lot of good suggestions (youth model). Have her shoulder a few of the suggested models and see what she likes. My 14yr old daughter shoots clays & now hunts with a 20ga Winchester SX3 Compact.

Benelli Montefeltro has a youth model available as well.

Thanks for all the replies most of these would have to be ordered off the net except the one from pacific sporting arms & it's $1900 + fees.I'm trying to keep this around $700 so a wood gas or pump shotgun seems like it would be the easiest to fit.a trip or two to triple Bs group class & if other alterations are needed Bob Day can fit the gun to her. I just picked up a pull cart and we are trying to get up to speed and try moore & moore.
