Then get a Hatfield. Half the money. More to spend when he gets older. That said I would get a quality 20 gauge semiauto, but not a youth model.

I bought a Mossberg Youth Bantam in 20 ga for my grandson.
      It wasn't "cheap" though

Yeah, it’s around $500, so not “cheap”. Other compareable guns were 800-1k

          Where do you live/shoot?
If you're close, bring your kid along one day so he can try it.

Hatfield has an interesting price tag. I agree, great buy for youth.

You can get a youth model Weatherby SA-08 20ga for $499.
Weatherby SA-08 Synthetic Semi-Auto Shotgun -Lightweight and durable injection-molded stock. Shorter 12 1/2" length of pull with 24" barrel. Vented top rib dissipates heat and aids in target acquisition. Features unique dual valve system for the widest range of load versatility. Available in 20 gauge.

For the age, a 20ga youth is good. When/if out grown, you could sell, or pick-up a longer barrel & full size stock, and still have a nice 20ga.

How tall is your 10 year old? Youths come in all sizes...is the SA20 sized for YOUR youth?

I picked up a really nice Mossberg 500 chambered in 410. I picked it up for $300. It's pretty small.

Not sure how tall. Of the ones we looked at this one fit the best.

That is the one I would go with assuming "best" means darn close to a good fit and not "best" from the other adult shotguns on the rack.
