Noob questions cont.: addons and ammo

Just picked up my first shotgun, an 870. Wondering what accessories i should put on it. Weapon mounted light, and extra shells are a must. I dont know that i need a sling because this is for the home... but sure. Maybe a front quadrail for the light and a QD mount all in one?

We have already established that for HD you want to use buckshot with flight control wads or some other technology like that. Shouldnt a hd setup have slugs included with most of them buck? Rifled slugs?

Why use slugs do you want to shoot thru walls and kill the neighbors if you miss. Inside house #4 buck or bb is plenty of knockdown power. I keep high base #2 goose loads for home defense.

You MUST have tactical pants, shirt, socks, boots, gloves, hat, knife, flashlight, mag extension, laser, breacher, sling, and ammo carrier at a minimum....anything less and that shot gun is just a lampstand in the corner.

Bird or 00 isn't always the best choice for all home defense scenarios.

Accurate shots at small targets with slugs in the home, (Bad guy behind concealment, Hostage, etc.) could make the difference.

OP, your best investment is to get some training using your new Boom Stick. Enjoy, and stay safe!

Most important thing to do: make sure the shotgun is reliable. Check quality of extractor and chamber.

Check LOP and see if it fits you. For me, the 14 inch lop of most shotguns is quite long and a stretch, so I change the butt stock for proper fit.

I don't add much to the shotgun beyond that as my 2 shotguns are used basically for HD, not hunting or game playing. As to ammo, I have several boxes of 00 buckshots.

I know this because I have a Mossberg 500, 7+1, 20" barrel.
Added to that is a heat shield (I have large hands, fingers & thumb touch the hot barrel). Ghost ring sights (part of heat shield).
Pic rail for weapon-mounted light (and keeps heat shield from creeping).
Weapon-mounted light (ID & aiming).
Side-saddle (00 in mag tube, slugs in saddle). Capable of 14 shells total.
Survival kit in hollow stock (mylar blanket, poncho, fire starter, glow stick, 1/2 a CD).
Two-point sling (too heavy to carry).
The macho youngsters (under 43 years old) think its 'cool-looking'. I let them carry it around. They change their mind before too long.

Add a barrel clamp mounted light or surefire light forend if you're feeling spendy. I guess a side saddle if you think it's necessary. I personally do not.

Does the 870 not come stock with sling mount attachments? I know my mossberg 590 does. Even still, I do not have a sling on it, but I guess if one were carrying a baby in hand or something like that a sling could be handy.

I got one of these for the light on my Mav88. Should fit the Rem I think. I like it because it's really low profile.

Got one of these for a sling point. You can remove the loop piece and just have a QD on both sides if you want.

I also got a cheap weapon light that I would NOT recommend for a shotgun. It stayed on and seemed fine when I ran a handful of slugs through it at the range, but when I was at my buddy's farm dumping mags, the end worked itself out (the threads that the bulb-housing screw into are actually on a ring that separates from the body of the light, apparently), and while I found the bulb housing and the battery on the ground, I couldn't find the switch mechanism that was behind the battery.
