Which slugs do you like and why?

Rather than buy 10 or 15 x 5-round boxes to try I thought I would tap into Calguns collective knowledge here and find out what slugs you like and why.

Looking for 2-3/4 1oz. slugs for target shooting and HD. Just got a 1/2" AR500 silhouette gong to play with, which should be fun.

What are your favorites?

No one can tell you what works best in your shotgun. Every shotgun shoots slugs differently. The only way to find out what your shotgun likes to eat is to buy and try a whole bunch of different slugs from different brands.

I know with my own shotguns the differences can be dramatic.

Some slugs might hit 6 inches different than others at 50 yards.

Each shotgun I own likes to eat something different than the others. Cost of the ammo had no relevance.

For me, lead slugs work the best out of my Remington 870, Benelli Super 90, and Mossberg 930. All have smooth bore barrels. Sabot slugs tend to work better out of a rifled barrel. They are a waste of money out of a smooth bore barrel.

I use to be able to hold 3" groups at 100 yards with iron sights with my Benelli Super 90 using Winchester 1oz slugs.

I have some Baschieri & Pellagri low-recoil slugs that are very nice to shoot. They hit a little low @ 50 yards compared to standard 1oz loads, but they should work great for home defense. They cost around $1/slug. Sign up for Aerostar Outdoor's emails, and they might have a Black Friday sale.

I hunt with Federal Premium copper sabot slugs. Shot one big boar so far, they are accurate and devastating.

In my 3 gun days, nothing worked better than Fiocchi 7/8 low recoil slugs.

For target shooting I use these,

May favorite slug is the Lyman 525 ("pellet" style) and the Lee 7/8 "key-drive" a close second. There is just so much that you can do to work with them in optimizing them for a given platform.

Box ammo, Fiocchi 7/8 low recoil slugs are very good. Reloads, Lee 7/8 key drive works well. You really have to try a range of slugs and see what your shotgun likes. Also what your shoulder likes.

Bought some Remington 20 gauge 1/2oz. slugs that fly 1,800fps. That's impressive for s shotgun slug.

For what you want to do any 1oz slug running at 1300 fps or less will fill the bill. Those come under the heading of Low Recoil or Law Enforcement level ammo

The chart posted above by Rorge has a good selection. If you get into the slugs at 1600 fps you will quickly learn about recoil. They are not pleasant to shoot unless you are hunting in which case you might only shoot 1 or 2.

For HD use you need to realize that nobody lives thru a center mass hit with a slug at any velocity.

A 12 ga shotgun is essentially a .73 Caliber Rifle when used with slugs.

For target shooting I use these,

I used them for 3-Gun out of a 870 and they grouped 4" or less at 100 yards. Limited by my me. Sitting position which gives you quite a bump.
Anybody wearing body armor will go down if hit by one. I don't think they would get up very soon.
I shot a 39" circle 1/4" steel plate welded to 3" x .25" Angle 7' long. I drove into the ground with a sledge hammer standing on the tailgate of my truck - Not AR500 - years ago. The slugs made very impressive dents and expanded nicely. Very reasonably priced also. I purchased a bunch at $0.35 each.

Other posters have mentioned trying different brands and loads and they are right to do so. Adding my caveat of staying with a Brenneke slug. Jack of all trades IMO.

*Slower low recoil stuff shoots lower and most higher velocity stuff shoots to poa at 100yds. YMMV.

Bead sight will let you hit a 24" or smaller circle at 100yds. Practice required.
Barrel length/choke type/sights matter here.

I found the creamy center, low cost slug loads that work well in my Mossberg 500/590/930spx (cylinder bores all) and was very surprised. RIO- R10 2 3/4" 1-1/8oz @ 1410fps.
Cheap enough to practice with and do hd duty.

Punching steel at 100yds yields a high giggle factor if you haven't done it before.
