Every cloud has a silver lining

So my cousin is getting married soon. He and I are on good(enough) terms, but most of the rest of the fam I'm meh about, optimistically speaking.

BUT, as I'm looking for a hotel I stumble across a sporting clays facility not far away This is now going to be a "shotgun wedding"

I've shot clay pigeons from a manual thrower, but never done sporting clays before. What can I expect? What should I bring? I've got a Mossberg 500, some dump pouches, eyes/ears, and that's it.

    here's the place http://www.coyoteclays.com/index.html

    ><

Mossberg with field stocks and 24" + barrel are good to go.....they also rent shotguns there. If you do the whole course its 100 targets....having a way to lug 4 boxes of shells around is a plus. Or you can rent a golf cart.

What day are you going I may join you and show you the ropes.

    FAQ page with info
Sporting clays is a fun and safe shotgun sport for the entire family. Mechanical traps are used to throw clay disc targets in varying directions allowing a shooter with a shotgun the opportunity of a sporting challenge anytime of the year. Sporting clays is commonly referred to as “golf with a shotgun”.

When’s the wedding? I might be interested in joining you too. I haven’t shot sporting clays much and welcome a chance to do it again.
      Sorry, not sorry.

Alright, it seems when life gives you lemons, you can make lemonade. Way to go!

Hopefully, you can meet up with some of the guys on here and they can give you some pointers that will help you out.

You'll probably need to swing fast and put a big lead on the clays.

As far as expectations go, I think you can plan on missing a few targets.

You can also expect to have a good time!

Coyote is a great place to shoot...they have the entire lower area and they have an area up on the ridge that you can get away from the crowd ( weekends can sometmes have a good amount of folks). The upper area is more difficult stations and requires a reservation and an employee to drive you around...they have trap and skeet too...

I rented an A400 last week to try (damn, now I need that too!) so they have cheapo and good demo guns too.

          You will have fun there...

Live dangerously and let us know your shoot time!

            How fun!

I would rent a shotgun perhaps with a mod choke. Buy their shells medium recoil #7.5 or #8. Ask to be shown how to use the controller, and if you have a buddy they will throw the clays for you.

You might rent a stroller to carry your stuff from station to station if they have them. Other than that hopefully they have a target presentation at each station so you know where to look for where the clays are coming from.

            Have fun!

You can expect to be embarrassed/humbled. I thought i was "good" with a shotgun as far as impromptu clays with my buddies. We would get quite a few friends together and play HORSE with a couple nice electric throwers. Sporting clays was a TON of fun but SO much more challenging.

Either way, it sounds like you’re gonna be making the best of it.

coyote clays is a great range. they seem to be doing well and continue to upgrade / invest in the site.

be aware they can get quite busy on the weekends. also check their online calendar to make sure they don't have a special event that day.

Wow, thanks for all the input guys! I'd be there morning of Oct 13; wedding starts late afternoon, so gotta get back to hotel, get cleaned up and whatnot. 4-5 hours of shooting, or until my shoulder dies?

Pace yourself son. It is not a game of "Whack-A-Mole", in spite of what Mr. YSR says.

Personally I am only good for 2 to 3 hours. A typical 100 clay match lasts about 2 hours. By then I am ready for a break.
