Semi for the win. Very reliable and very little weight difference for carry up a mountain. Faster follow up shots when needed. (Like me shooting behind ducks)

I’m sure other will say pump so I’ll get my flame suit ready.

Personal preference. Why not break action?

Semi auto, there are great guns from $500 on up at every price level. Mossberg 930 and Beretta A300 are great choices for under $1000.

No matter what you get, you'll need to get out and practice.
With a pump, you need to shoot it enough, so that the "pump" becomes automatic (no thinking & fast), for a follow up shot (if you missed) or for the 2nd bird.
A semi might be easier to learn on.

But don't sell a pump short, many, many, many hunters learned on a pump and became very proficient with one.

I used an 870 for many years on quail, dove & duck. Used a Nova pump for a couple years on ducks until Remington came out with an 870 with a 3 1/2" chamber.

Now I shoot a variety of shotguns when I hunt. It depends on the species and which one I feel like shooting. I enjoy side by sides & pumps for quail and camo finish semi autos (never should have sold my camo 870) for waterfowl.

A gas semi-auto is usually lighter than a pump, and recoils much less.

I own a 870 but I wanted to read the opinions of people that shoot pump and semiauto so I could deside to buy a semi-auto for bird hunting. I heard that the follow up shot is easier with semi-auto. Thank you all for your replies.
