    Before modern trap and skeet...

    Shotgun practice was formerly done, 19th century, Victorian times, by releasing live pigeons in the field from devices called TRAPS. Some folks thought this sport was unethical so clay target games were invented to replace this.

    They kept the names TRAP and PIGEON. The clay targets were called clay PIGEONS and the machine for launching these was still called a TRAP.

    They also kept the command PULL. On the original trap to spring live pigeons, a trap operator pulled a cord to make the device work. Nowadays when a gunner calls PULL, he may direct the trap person to push a button to toss a clay disk instead.

    Yes, it is unethical to shoot at live animals for mere shotgun target practice.

    An ethical sportsman ensures he can hit phony birds well before trying his hand in the hunting fields upon live critters.

      Ok, in Skeet you used to call pull to release the high house target.
      What did you call to release the low house target?

        I believe PULL is also used. The launching device in both houses is still called a TRAP.

                PULL

                the rules of the game and the station number dictate whether a single or double is thrown if memory serves me correctly

                  Ok, here it is...

                  Pull = High House

                  Mark = Low House

                  Birds = Double

                  This goes way back to when the machines were all manual. There had to be a way for the "Trap" boys to know who should release the target.

                    I believe PULL is now used universally for all targets in a complete skeet round, 25 birds all told, these days. Which traps are operated in which sequence are according to the one of eight skeet stations the gunner is shooting.

                    Perhaps in the early days of skeet, the shooter had the option of telling the trap boys how he wanted the targets to be presented.

                            When I started for doubles we called doubles the other two we did.
