    SoCal Skeet Clinic recap 9/9/2018

    Day late sorry gents.
Good day day yesterday for clays. Nice temperature & cloudy on the drive to Triple Bs. Good weather for about an hour than it got hot. Thankfully there was some shade.
We got kicked out of our normal number 10 spot. Shoved off to number 12 I believe. Dang Sensei Shooters! Hope you CalGunners showed them how to play skeet properly!
Coach Don and guest instructor Ken Simpson were present teaching us new guys. Ken left a bit early but as always him being there is helpful & appreciated. I heard Don telling Ken he was right about posture & boy you should have seen that smile on Ken's face as he gave Don a hug.

8 total students. 3 returning. 5 new. Two who never shot clays before. Day started off with a group eye coordination, gun fit, and gun mounting. Up next a good demonstration by Ken on proper technique. The clays started flying afterwards with the more experienced guys up front. Newer guys watching than getting coached while shooting. Some clays broke midair. Some clays broke on the ground. Did that on all the stations up until we ran outta clays around 6. Quick break. Than everyone got to shoot a round of skeet. The experienced guys got to shoot doubles. Everyone else doing singles. Finished up around 2pm? By the end you could tell everyone was more confident in themselves and the technique.
Few Don Ziegler Z-Method books sold. Let me tell you if you plan on shooting skeet and haven't bought one of those books. Do yourself a favor and get one. It's got just about everything you learn in the class. From proper fit, to gun holds for each station, and everything in between. Unfortunately the only thing it doesn't have is Coach Don yelling at you!

Afterwards of few us stayed back and played one more game of skeet. A big thank you to Lucca as well for that extra game. We got to practice a few spots.

All in all another great clinic ran by Coach Don & Instructor Ken. Well worth the $30. I don't think you can get a better value for the expert knowledge around these parts.

Thanks for reading and I hope you'll find yourself down at Triple B's for one of these awesome clinics in the future!

I attended this clinic 4 years ago but don't remember how it was set up. I was brand new to clay sports then.

Do you get instructions for all 8 stations?

I've been to just two clinics so my knowledge is limited. In my time I've received instructions on 7 stations. The book has instructions on all 8 stations. Instructor Ken showed me the technique for station 8 during a game at the end of the clinic.

I think I have done 10 of these clinics. First clinic I was lucky to hit 5 of 25 because I was that bad and I was only shooting singles for doubles.

By the last clinic I had already competed in Don's 80th birthday shoot, done a couple of Sansei shoots, won a couple, gotten my 25 straight patch and hole in my hat, and was pretty competent at shooting doubles. Not bad for $300, and the $20 for the book(first clinic, I made Don sell me his trunk copy ).

A few months ago there was a law enforcement fundraiser trap shoot for the Simi Valley 3rd annual clays for k9s. Our team being primarily skeet shooters clean local law enforcement's clocks and won first place. It was later explained that police don't shoot at moving targets. I did not think trap shooting was considered moving targets either, but the cops could not hit the broad side of a barn apparently.

Thanks Don, Richard, Dave, and Ken!

I've been to 20+ of these clinics, it is the best bang for the buck in shotgun instruction.
When I started I wasn't much better than shovelon, if at all. After 8 or 10 clinics I asked Don to pull a round for me after the clinic, he agreed. I shot my first 25 straight, I think Don was happier than I was.

He even gave me one of his own 25 straight patches

Thanks for sharing that! I have attended two and will repeat, it's the best bang for the buck 10fold. I won't be able to attend the 29th, but hope to attend the one in October.

I was one of the new guys and would say this clinic is totally worth it... and this is coming from probably the worse shooter out there. I hit maybe 5 out of 50, but learned learned a lot about the fundamentals and the stance/motions.

I would have had no idea where to start if I had just shown up for a round on my own with a buddy.

                    Good report Vot!

Vot, great recap of the Skeet Clinic on Sep 9. I can tell that you've written reports before, concise but thorough, thorough but concise! The best part of your post was, "Some clay targets were broken in midair, others were broken on the ground." ROFLMAO!!!

Thanks to Don and Ken for some awesome instruction, at a bargain price!
The only problem is, after a couple hours of knee-bending, hip-swiveling, arse-sticking-outing, I am now unable to walk. Anybody who has been through the Z-Man's classes knows what I'm talkin' bout. Oh, ok, maybe it's my age, I'm only 59, you young whippersnappers!

                      Great recap, indeed

I also took this clinic on Sept 9th which was my 8th consecutive attendance. I am still long way to go to shoot like other blackbelt Ziegloids, but I am sure I will eventually shoot 90s if I continue coming to this clinics and improve my shooting skill.

Coach Don started teaching me double for station #2 and 6, and I realized how important to use lower body, i.e. vend the left knee to load the spring in order to get the front of the bird.

I highly recommend all attendees to purchase a copy of Don's book 'Z Technique For Skeet Shooting'. The book has many pictures that guide you correct setup (foot position, form, hold-point for gun/eyes, etc.) and it helps me quite a bit for reviewing what I learned.

Thanks again to Coach Don and Instructor Ken Simpson for teaching us. Like I said before, this is the best bang for your $30 (pun intended).

I look forward to see new attendees and repeaters at next clinic.

P.S. I want Team Ziegloid T-shirt and cap Ken was wearing at the clinic. Can someone reproduce them??
