Semi-Auto Shotgun for HD

Hmmm...lets see if I can get EVERYONE to hate me all at once.

Call me crazy ( I know many will) but I got a great deal on my Kel-Tec KSG and it is a dream. I've put nearly 700 rounds through it (bird, buck, slug, and even low brass stuff that the wise ol' internet swears won't cycle) and not had a single flub of any kind. The dimensions of it and weight feel just right for the close quarters of home defense (especially indoors). And if you're the type inclined to mount a light or a laser the KSG is ready to oblige.

Does anyone who actually owns one care to comment? Keep in mind mine is a late model so if the previous generations had problems they are resolved by the most contemporary version I own.

I have a Mossberg 590A1 with Magpul furniture. It is a fine gun.

I also have a Beretta 1301 Comp with 21" barrel. This is also a fine gun. I cannot recommend the Beretta 1301s enough. If you are looking strictly for HD, you might want to take a look at the tactical version with 18" barrel. The 21" represents a good combo of home and sport. The new tactical models are also available with chokes I believe and you can get them with pistol grips as well (Mesa Urbino stocks). You can add extensions to both and the LOP starts at 13" and longer with spacers. My 1301 shoots whatever I throw at it and its a Beretta so it has a pretty good reputation.

I heard this things kick like a donkey, is that true? Of the tacticool shotguns I've seen I would probably do the DP12 if I could find a good deal on one. I haven't shot either so it's purely conjecture. They both look like great house clearing weapons.

I've finally decided on........the Mossberg 930 Tactical (85322) with the 18.5 inch barrel, bead front sight, and 7+1 capacity.

It is the shotgun that is the most within budget. It will allow me to have some spending funds for upgrades later such as: picatinny rail, red-dot sight, etc. Since it is my first auto shotgun purchase, I just can't see the advantage of overspending on a higher tier brand.

I hope mine will be trouble-free. And just in case it is not, I am setting aside some funds for some OR3GUN parts. Been watching a lot of youtube videos on how to trouble shoot this and that problem.

I appreciate all your postings, feedbacks, and recommendations.

+1 on the Beretta 1301 .... The TAC or 21" Comp will fill the bill. Nordic +2 tube kit (7+1+1) fits perfectly flush on the TAC, the Lancer Systems +3 Carbon Fiber tube (8+1+1) fits just past the barrel on the 21" Comp and flush with a standard choke......and looks positively bad asss! Both are reliable with everything I run thru them. I use the GG&G sling loop and rail to mount a light, it slides in between the mag tube cap and mag tube extension, is super slick. Go the extra mile and deck them out with some Mesa Tactical options and it's as good as it possibly gets.

So far still got both hands and 10 fingers. And although before I got mine I was concerned about that pesky [blow your handa off] stuff too. Turns out there's just two or possibly three actual cases of that happening and very likely they were user error. Nonetheless, I did upgrade my lower picatinny rail to metal. I'd rather be called paranoid than stumpy or Captian Hook.

I have no trouble at all with the recoil or kick from my KSG. It might help that I had planned for the worst (after reading a bunch online before purchasing mine or shooting one). I swear mine is the same as the Mossberg 500 I used to own, and actually the 500 felt a little more harsh to me. I did put the extra thick butt pad on it though. Maybe that helps.

Congrats on your purchase. Looks like an excellent choice. I'm sure it will serve you well as long as you get very comfortable with it. The more the better.

+2 on the 1301 beretta,i picked up last years model for $600. It's a light short & easy to point HD shotgun.

I just got the mossberg 930 tactical (not the SPX, so no ghost sights as I prefer a nice open bead for home defense, and it has the rifle stock) for $399. I ordered the Mesa Urbino pistol grip for it (get the good pad; pay the extra $25, it's worth it), and it still comes in less cost than the SPX's in almost every configuration (and it's 2 inches shorter with the Mesa grip).

The 930 with the Mesa grip is known to have issues with low brass/low velocity ammo, but if you plan to use hard hitting ammo (like me), then this gun is known for fast, crisp cycling.

Klipsh, that is exactly what I ordered from my LGS. I also would like to be able to shoot some " heavy thumpers ".

While I like the bead sight, I would like to upgrade mine to a " Hi-Viz " fiber optic front sight. I still don't have the shotgun. I've asked my LGS to order it for me.

Quick question.....did your shotgun came in one of those colorful, blue Mossberg box?
