Surface rust

I have a Mossberg Maverick 88 ,and I went to inspect the gun and notice a brownish tint to the barrel. I applied some hoppes9 and a fine 3 m pad ,and the brownish substance doesn't seem to be disappearing even though the barrel doesn't seem rusted anymore. Am I rubbing the bluing off? It did seem to rub off only around the welds of the barrel screw mount. Starting not to like blued Shotguns.

I have a Remington 1100 that no matter how many times I run an oiled cloth over the barrel, it comes back brown.

Blueing itself is a form of rust. I talked to some old guys, and they said there's nothing you can do about it.

Consider removing the mag tube to inspect the spring for rust and lube the inside of the mag tube. If you have a plastic follower, make sure the lube does not melt / soften the plastic

Hoppe's 9 is the wrong stuff for that purpose. Use something like RemOil or CLP.

If the "3 m pad" is a ScotchBrite-type pad, that is absolutely the wrong thing to rub the gun with, because most 3M pads have industrial diamonds embedded into the pad material, and that makes them very abrasive. So, yes, you might actually be removing the bluing.

The right way to clean surface rust is to use brass or bronze or copper wool, lubricated with a light oil like CLP or RemOil or even good old 3-In-1 Oil. You can also use stainless steel scouring pads (with oil) from the local grocery store. Stainless is softer than the barrel steel, and is often used on fine guns.

If the gun is old, the bluing might just be going plum-colored with age. That is pretty common on certain guns like Mirokus and some Remingtons, but I don't know if it affects Mossturds.

Flitz seemed to slowly get the rust off,and I do mean slowly. I ordered some breakfree and some bronze fine wool from home depot. I may try hitting it with the wool and Flitz as their website suggests.

I actually asked Flitz this. They said it won't harm it as long as it's the factory Hot Bluing. I'll try the CLP and wool first for sure.

Some will poopoo, but #0000 steel wool and WD-40 works good.

Another "home remedy" is to rub with a copper penny.

But ya NO Scotchbrite. Common tool for removing blueing.
