What if the bird shot doesn't take him down and he gets a shot off at you? The 00 Buck should be your first choice. If that doesn't take him down, a slug won't. Besides, why do you have a slug if you're worried about a possible miss going through walls (re: your thinking about the bird shot.)

I was dropping off a trailer at a farm field this morning and seen a pile of spent shot gun shells on the ground and had to smile. By the way, I have heard #4 shot is supposed to be pretty good for self defense. Something about just the right ammount of penetration and energy dump. I don't know, Just what I read from a study online somewhere.

Better than nothing. Birdshot doesn't make sense to me. Extend the logic leading to birdshot and you might end up with bean bag rounds or blanks.

If I'm firing in self defense it ain't gonna be birdshot. First up for me is a DDupleks Hexolit 32 fragmenting slug. If I didn't have those handy I would go PDX1 fragmenting slug.

              bird shot is for birds
It's not the fall that kills you, it's the sudden stop at the bottom.

Looks like you put them in backwards for you intentions....last in is first fired

What bird shot did you use......BB, #2, 4, 5, #6 or #8....lead or steel shot

Bird shot kills birds because the centers of their vital organs are an inch (dove) or two (duck) below the skin. Ours are six inches or more.

Bird shot may result in ugly flesh wounds, but is unlikely to incapacitate a bad guy, especially if they're drugged up.

Do I want to be shot by a birdshot round? Of course not. But that oft-stated pathetic logical argument doesn't translate to birdshot being an optimal round.

I want some rubber riot balls or Salt shot for the first round or two then #4 buck shot followed by slugs.

My HD Shotgun is a Jm pro 930 so i have 10 rds. For now I have Buck shot loaded in it.

Sounds good. That is if Big Bird breaks into your house.

Stupendously bad idea. If you are using deadly force, use it. Don't maximize your legal and personal liability while minimizing your effectiveness with something made for a specific purpose outside of the scope of self defense.

Good point but if a warning shot could get rid of a mentally disabled homeless man or a confused college kid that drunk stumbled in to my house and avoids me having to face a jury of my peers I think it's a pretty decent start.

I can unload a magazine tube of 10 slugs in less than a minute and I practice it often so I don't think its too bad to have one warning shot. Maybe I'm wrong....

I don't know. In the heat of the moment bad things happen, even trained police officers shoot unarmed people by mistake and look how that usually works out for them. In the dark, I don't want to have to make that decision. We don't have castle law in CA.
