    Mossberg 930 Upgrades

Been reading and watching you tube videos and came across the " OR3 gun " products.

Have any one of you used any of those aftermarket products: spacers, recoil spring retainer, recoil spring plunger on your 930s to improve reliability?

    Just curious.

Used their marine spacer tube and recoil spring plunger.

Made sure my extractor traveled fully inward by filing the bolt where
it might prevent full travel. Polished the chamber. I have a nylon? follower
from not sure where now. All the metal ones I didn't trust. Make sure you do not have the mag spring/follower getting caught up on the magazine tube gap if you go with another mag tube or try to put a rail or sling mount in between. Do NOT use shell carriers that replace reciever trigger pins with chicago screws, it compresses the frame and causes problems. Use velcro and shotgun cards instead.
Make sure the big gas spring has no burrs marring the mag tube. Keep your mag tube there clean and smooth with 000 steel wool. The gas spring needs little lubrication, or dry lube it, too wet it will gum up early. Gas spring dry, bolt wet!

    Polish the carrier latch....

Make sure any places in the receiver where the bolt is rubbing are smoothed out.

My 930 tactical has ran like crap since new. Tried every type of ammo, shoots a couple, then double feeds, sometimes failure to extract etc different type of malfunction each time. Sometimes gets lucky and can shoot the whole mag tube full, but mostly jams a few times before it gets empty.

Tried taking it apart and cleaning the gas system and lubing it as recommended. But nothing.

You should contact Mossberg. My 930 SPX has always functioned flawlessly but had some other issues and they repaired everything I requested no questions asked even though the gun was seven years old.

My 930 jm pro has been flawless since day 1. I only wish they made a 28" version, the 24" is a bit short for my usual purposes.

I have a 24" JM Pro 930 with intial failures to feed and cycle using target loads. The failures to feed are common enough that Brownells has the free fix here. I followed the directions and never had a failure to feed since.

To address cycling light loads, I'm now running OR3GUN Security Combo (Marine Spacer Tube, Competition Spring Plunger & Adjustable Spring Retainer). The combo let's me set the recoil spring at approximately +5%, 0%, -5% and -10% from stock. I have it set to -5%. I can reliably shoot Walmart bulk Federal Target and Multi-purpose loads which are basically the weakest affordable loads.

I also use their magazine follower just because it's blue to easily show an empty mag for the RSO.

So far, I'm cleaning every 300-400 rounds following Jerry Miculek's cleaning video, and it's been running flawlessly for 700+ rounds. I haven't shot it to failure but it seems like it'll run well past 400 rounds without cleaning.

On you tube, I saw several 930 owners with your predicament.

They started using the " competition spacer " the blue colored, then the stainless recoil spring plunger, and the adjustable recoil spring retainer...... and the 930 became reliable.....shooting birdshot loads to the really heavy stuff.

One owner also gave pointer on how to chamfer the ends of the recoil spring (the one in the butt tube). Supposedly, this prevents the recoil spring from digging into the inside of the tube, which is accordingly, a more common occurrence causing burrs.

I am not selling anything here nor am I affiliated with OR3Gun products. Just throwing out what I saw on you tube. Try one of those and post back with your experience.

I am really getting interested in the Mossberg 930 nowadays. The affordable price and the plethora of aftermarket products that can improve reliability makes it a very enticing alternative to the more expensive brands.

I've also read and learned that the " Pro " line (JM Pro, Hunting and Sporting Pro) have the proprietary coating (Boron Nitride) in some of the internal components, making the piece more resistant to corrosion and slicker.

Only thing negative I can say is, some of the 930s I've handled have loose forend and bolt handle.

Hmm.I bought a 930 from Buds about three years ago. It's the "Duck Commander model. I've had it at the trap range a few times and in the field some chasing quail and chukar. I only have about 2,000 rounds thru it. It cycles light target loads, your std upland loads perfectly. I've had no negative issues with mine whatsoever. I'm sure their are better 12ga auto's out there, but, this one has been spot on. For dove, it's still my 20ga Wingmaster. That won't change.

I believe you can use the longer barrels off regular 930's on the JM Pro.

The bolt handle has a little wiggle because it pulls straight out during cleaning. The forearm wiggle just means the magazine cap isn't tightened enough. I was worried on mine, then just got a couple more clicks out of the mag cap and it seems to stay put.
