great starter gun to see if you like shotgun sports.
my son in law hunted with one his 1st hunting season, it's worked great. small issues but nothing big.

OP. Excellent choice for starters. Regarding rifled barrels. Any barrel that works for a Mossberg 500 NON SECURITY MODEL should work for you. The 88 is the same design regarding the barrel. And the 28 inch will work very well for skeet. It's a great gun to start with, but as time goes if you really get into skeet, you will eventually appreciate an O/U and an Autoloader. the range near me allows you to shoot a HD shotgun using those spring loaded throwers, 7 or 8s work well for this. Slugs pack a big punch so i don't practice much with them and only on the rifle range. I took a few shotgun classes at Triple Bs,it's a great way to pick up the fundamentals.Comment

Maverick 88 is an excellent basic gun - especially with the combo barrel set. Try the regular barrels with foster slugs before you invest in a rifled barrel - those are truly only worth it if you are lobbing sabot rounds out to 100+ meters.

I just bought a Maverick 88 combo at Big 5 too! Picked it up the other day. Haven't had it out to the range, but I second the points already put forth:
Get some #7.5 or #8 target loads to shoot some trap, it's a ton of fun. I haven't been to any of the bay area trap ranges yet, so can't recommend one, I go to the Yolo Sportsman's range near Woodland for trap, haven't tried Skeet yet.
You already made the smart choice of a Limbsaver recoil pad, and I don't know what else you might need, will let someone who hunts chime in on that.
Depending on what part of the bay area you are in, Reed's Indoor Range in Santa Clara allows all 12ga loads (birdshot, buckshot, or slugs, but no steel) at their facility:
