Remington 870 20ga - Using 12ga Mag Ext??

Hello!

I recently acquired an old 870 express magnum in 20 gauge.
I'm looking for a magazine extension and I saw one on Ebay for a Choate brand.
The seller mentioned that on older (20 years or so) 870 20ga, the magazine extension might be built on 12ga.

Is this possible?

The seller also mentioned that to find out, remove the cap from the magazine tube and see if the 12ga shell will fit the diameter of the tube, and if it does I need a 12ga extension and not 20ga.

I tried and the shell fits inside the tube but not the brass part.

I wanted to know if anyone out there had the same issue with me and if I really need a 12ga extension.

The only 20 ga Remington I have owned I recently sold; a LT-20 built on the smaller receiver. Your gun, depending on it's manufacture date and without seeing a photo, might be built on the 12 ga receiver, which is why your mag tube may require the 12 ga extension.

I just did a deeper research and found out that IF it's based on the 12ga receiver, the 20ga aftermarket stock won't work. Since I have a 20ga Hogue stock, I'll see if that fits and if not it's based on 12ga receiver meaning I need the 12ga mag extension.

Fuggetaboutit. If it's an Express 20 Mag, it's not on a 12ga receiver. The 20-on-12 was the first gen 870 20 ga and came only in 2-3/4" chamber. You can find serial number ranges on the Rem web site, or just call Rem parts line and quit wasting your time.

20ga guns built on a 12ga frame could be identified by a "X" or "N" in the serial number... The Express 20 did not exist at that time.
