Mossberg 500 hard to pump during extraction cycle

I don't know if the barrel area is the problem. Could be the receiver area that's dirty. Clean it, oil it and shoot it. It will loosen up the more you shoot it.

It's possible. If you think it is, try some different ammo and see.

Many have had problems with the Winchester Universal 4 packs (100 rounds) from WM.

I had this problem with my 870. I think it was the ammo. I’ll try it out in Sept when I dove hunt.

It's not completely the ammo, it was pecular to only that one round. I have had to "Butt Stroke" my M500 exactly one time, but I have seen others in a Shotgun Class do it many times with all brands of ammo. In fact they teach you how to Butt Stroke at Front Sight, and it is considered clearing a malfunction. You kind of have to get serious with it..

As you are coming down with the butt and you have rearward pressure on the slide, bring your knee up and hit the butt pad hard. This will usually break the stuck hull free.

One thing to look at is the chamber. They rust quickly after cleaning and you need to make sure they have a coating of oil or some kind of rust preventative in the chamber to prevent this. This will cause spent hulls to stick sometimes.

Nothing to worry about, it happens. Just shoot it, it was an anomaly.

I knew a guy who would wear out the Action bars on his 870... the mossberg wore out slower as it has 2.....

He was twisting the pump as he cycled the action.... Mossberg, like EVERYONE ELSE, has tried to keep prices the same when costs have increased.

If you have some mechanical ability, I would break the gun down and look for burs or shiny spots....

Remove the pump, action bars and bolt.... run a soft cloth over things so that a bur can snag the cloth- you eyes and hands will also spot burs...

spots that are shiny and polished from incorrect fit... if you have them, you need to figure out why the metal is wearing....

The action bars on a Mberg are stamped parts and they have large burrs on the exit side of the stamping. Using a file to break those edges helps alot. Also the Shell Stops are done the same way.

The bolt slide(the part under the bolt that moves the bolt can also use the edges broke with a file.

That's pretty much it inside the gun, and doing these simple things which you should be able to do just to do a decent cleaning on the gun will make it much more enjoyable to shoot.

Another thing that happens is when you run the slide, if you twist it, it will want to bind up to a small degree. Magpul fixed this by incorporating a guide into their fore end that prevents the Fore End from twisting.

The safety is another place that needs attention. You need to get a Brownell's Safety with the raised center, this helps with positive deployment of the safety however breaking the edges on the little L shaped part on the inside that blocks the trigger helps with smoothness. Also when assembling tighten the screw up all the way and then back it off about 1/4 turn. This takes some of the pressure off the part and makes it run smoother.

Then shoot the hell out of it to finish the job.

When reassembling the gun try Vaseline on all the internal parts. It works wonders.

Hope this helps. These guns are not hard to work on at all. If you can clean the gun, you can do all this.

Have you tried different ammo? I ran across one MFG that does the same in my M500. All other brands work just fine.

Yes, the Magpul "Fore End" is a good upgrade and the stock is really good also.
