Home defense ammo, and cheap range ammo.

Okay, so recomendations(to be fired out of a remington 870) for

    Cheap Range ammo
    -12 gauge
    -buckshot or slugs
-(I've used this one so far, seems ok, anything cheaper?
    250 shells for 125 at ammunitiontogo (http://www.ammunitiontogo.com/catalo...gauge-buckshot)

    Home Defense Ammo
    -12 gauge
-What about low recoil? helpful or hurtful?
-Whatever is gonna tear somebody a new one
    - not concerned about damage to the house, because if I don't plan to use it, but if you gotta use it its in desperate times.

The Rio royal low recoil OO buck would be an excellent HD round in addition to using it at the range.

Sweet, so far its good but the ups guy damaged like 5 shells when he smashed the box.

Is there any particular difference in low recoil and regular when being used within a house, at close distance?

I saw on the outdoor channel yesterday, they were testing shotgun ammo penetration through walls. The buckshot loads were piercing right through several walls. So if you happen to be in an emergency situation and shot your 00buck, that could possibly go into another room or even leave the house. Then they used some cheap birdshot at close distance on a mannequin and shot at the walls also. the birdshot blow a hole into the mannequin but did not penetrate the walls. So in my opinion, if you happen to be shooting at a person inside your home, 10feet away, you probably will kill the person even with birdshot, so any 12gauge shotgun ammo will do the job good enough. I say use some heavy birdshot or magnum load but i think 00 or 000 buck is too much. But then again, i have 00buck low recoil in my mossberg And slugs

know your target and whats beyond it. Shoot to kill, dont give them the chance to kill or sue you.

I bought some LE over stocks several years ago 250 rounds of federal 00 buck tight wad for about 75 dollars a case. bought 1000 rounds or 4 cases. I only have like 5 boxes left and thats for HD. This stuff patterns tight at 10 yards out of a cylinder bore.

I'll just take cheap 00 buck and birdshot to the range...just to get my kicks from shooting the thing. I'll spend a lot of money for HD ammo to get the better stuff but I buy a lot less of it. Maybe consider #4 buck rather than 00 buck. I'd say anything lethal will penetrate walls but #4 buck's smaller pellets might go through less. 00 bucks at close range is going to be pretty nasty...

AmmoToGo has the NobelSport LE #4 buck, 27 pellet rounds. I haven't had a chance to fire them at the range yet to compare those to Federal's low recoil LE 00 buck 9 pellet.

Have any of you guys shot the Hornady SST slugs. They are suppose to deliver 2" groups at 100yards. But i think that from a rifled barrel. I wonder what they can do from a cyclinder bore.

I load my HD shotgun with progressively more lethal shot... #4 then OO buck then Slug then repeat. If the guy is still moving after the first rotation, we might have a SHTF situation!

                    Box of truth:

                    To quote:

"It was # 6 shot. There was a crater in the skin over an inch in diameter. When the shot hit the level of the ribs, it spread out about five inches. There was ONE pellet that had passed between the ribs and entered the pericardium, but not damaged the heart at all. As you say, 'use birdshot for little birds.'""

I was always a bit unsure of it myself as well, although I had thought about seriously doing it on more than a few occasions; between 00 and #4 buck, all LE stamped rounds. I don't have much data to prove any particular way but I kind of figured that staying consistent with one round through the entire load would just be better. I keep a mix of both rounds on the shell holder though.

Super interesting... depends whether you intend to kill or just hurt your targets. The more effective, the more potentially dangerous to family, I guess its the trade off. I.e. If you shoot, make sure you intend to kill your target and that you're not firing wildly

So, can we get back to cheap range ammo

and what recomended HD rounds? like whats the diff between 0 00 and 000 buck?

What about the buck and slug or shotcup and buck?

I'm pretty sure #4 buck will have no problem being lethal at indoor distances...but it's a constant debate I have with myself; whether to load up all #4 or 00 buck. Apartment dwellers might want #4 since the next guy over could be through a wall by about 20 feet from where you are shooting. Could be a child...

And I would say that you should always be aware of your surroundings tactically, so think it through beforehand and maybe do some dry runs as to what you would do if various situations presented themselves. That way, it won't be completely foreign to you if something actually does happen. Just know what will be behind your target and where things are in the house, so you can take up different angles, etc.
