Mossberg HS12 Thunder Ranch Over/Under fighting shotgun

I dig combat shotguns for some reason. This one is unique because it's an over/under. Maybe I dig it because I've always thought that a short, double-barrel side-by-side break-action the most intimidating firearm I had ever seen at one point... I still kinda have that opinion, even though I've graduated to a level of firearms' knowledge and experience where I appreciate many over-100-year-old gun designs.

With only a little practice (on a single-shot break-action), one can reload these things rather quickly to "stay in the fight", as they say.

Of course this kind of weapon isn't everyone's cup of tea, judging from prior threads on the subject of defensive shotgun use. I cannot blame the clays purists; they remain single-minded.

I understand the attraction. Legacy used to offer a similar gun.

I wanted one, but could never justify it. I almost rationalized it as a "travelling defensive gun", since it could be broken down into smaller components ( barrels, action/stock, forend ) and tossed into a smaller bag. But how often would I drag it out on a trip? Almost never - easier to take along a pistol.

The average defensive pump is cheaper to buy, holds more rounds, and can quickly be topped off as needed. There's a reason why O/U and SxS defensive shotguns are a niche item.

Still, two rounds of buck would probably suffice for most HD scenarios...and because of the nature of the action, even with 18 inch barrels these things are roughly the size of a pump/semi SBS.

Know how to run the gun you got. Great quote. That said, a pump will be more appealing for capacity and reliability. I do like the looks of the Mossberg though.

              schwiiiiiiiiiiiiing.

And I prefer my gear with walnut furniture.

              Still... that's hawt.

I cut down a 32" 12ga goose barrel on an old, inexpensive H&R single-shot because at the time I was too cheap to drop $450 on a walnut-and-blued version of a Stoeger.

Now I think any short side-by-side would be an excellent! less-lethal option merely for it's muzzle "presence". Much better than racking a pump gun in hopes of a non-lethal outcome.

Michael, thanks for posting that Legacy. That's pretty neat.

That is cool. However impractical. Pump holds more ammo and is faster to reload.

Maybe it's my browser, but that's just a big black square for me.

But is that where Clint Smith says, "I don't need a $1000 dollar shotgun. I need to learn to run the gun I got!"... or something? I always enjoy listening to Clint Smith.

It is hard to justify buying a “tactical shotgun” like these, when there Re so many decent repeater options for less money...
...but it’s still cool as heck! I’ve handled the Stoeger and the Mossberg, as well as shot some coachguns to know that even just two, extremely nimble and handy shots, could be perfectly effective.

That's why I shoot autos when hunting coveyed birds. It's not the 3rd shot as much as it's not coming out of battery to top off. I'd apply the same reasoning to HD.
