    Grandpa's Browning Over and Under...

I don't know much about this shotgun except that it was my grandfather's, it is made by Browning, is 12ga, and is over and under. Anybody know the history?
Maybe what they original sold for? What type of shooting it is best for (duck hunting I assume but trap or skeet?). Just curious.

Hard to say without knowing what it was made for. You can get information on mfg date model from this site.

What are the barrels choked at?

I don't know anything about it, but Grandpa had great taste.

I assume it is a Citori model but am not sure. The serial number is different than on the chart. Mine has a series of numbers with no letters then a space then S70. But nothing on the chart matches that.

It has a full open choke as far as I can tell.

Thank you, I agree. It is a very cool "Gentleman's" shotgun.

WOW!!! Just checked the Browning site to see what current production models sell for. Talk about sticker shock! Grandpa wasn't known for splurging on himself. But he must have with this one.

Of course, I would NEVER sell it. Grandpa was my favorite person in the world and this was his baby. I am hoping this thing gets handed down for many generations to come.

Looks like a standard lightning model. Does it say Belgium or Japan? You can tell the choke(s) by looking at the side of the mono-block.

                If fixed chokes:

                * = full choke
                *_ = improved modified
                ** = modified
                **_ = improved cylinder
                **$ = skeet
                *** = cylinder

                    ><

"S70" = 1970 and that would make it a Superposed model made in Belgium

If it is a Superposed then it is a seriously nice shotgun. You can still get a Superposed from the Custom Shop. It takes a couple of years and they are expensive.

Browning confirmed what Thefeeder said. Browning customer service wrote: "this was a Browning Superposed, manufactured in 1970."

Hate to sound like the O/U noob that I am, but what part is the mono-block?

I looked all over this thing for anything resembling those markings and had no luck.

I have learned how to break it down, how to use the safety both as a safety and how to select between barrels, and all sorts of things you experienced folks take for granted. Having a lot of fun learning how to use this thing.

My weekends for the next few months are tied up finishing the renovations on my house in Rancho Cordova (soon to be a rental property). Once it is done and rented I will have my weekends back and will have time to hit the range again. Very much looking forward to that day.
