Opinions on Kel-Tec KSG?

Thinking about added one to my arsenal for HD and backcountry SD use. Would add a FTSS switch. Informed opinions appreciated.

I think it's a toy. The amount of plastic used increases the amount of felt recoil and you are better off saving a few hundred dollars by getting a Mossberg or Remington. Firing the thing fast can be dangerous if your hand slips off the slide, a few people have blown their hands off.

Definitely a novelty item, I had one but ultimately sold it. I would look to something more reliable for home defense and it is way to bulky for backcountry use. The capacity was nice, but if you ever had to reload it under pressure you are better off throwing it at your attacker. The build quality on mine was lacking as was the overall fit and finish. For pretty much equal money I would look at one of the new generation Beretta 1301 Tactical models. It will serve every purpose you listed and be better at it.

I just picked mine up 2 weeks ago and have taken it out twice already. I don't have a ton of rounds through it yet but I really enjoy it. I did lots of research on it before I bought mine and from my experience, people either love them or hate them. Is it worth almost double the price of a Mossberg or Remington? Meh, I don't know. It's a cool looking gun IMO and it's been on my short list of must have's for a while. There are some things that are a pain in the you know what about it and I can see why people sell them off because of it. If you do decide to purchase it I'd highly recommend one of these the felt recoil isn't bad at all with that installed. I was concerned about all the reports of people blowing their hands off but as far as I'm concerned, I don't see that being a reasonable fear. I can see how it can happen but with proper gun safety and trigger knowledge, I don't see it being a real concern. I'm in the Fullerton/Brea area if you're somewhat local and haven't shot one but would like to before considering it further.

I have the regular KSG and the KSG 25 and love them. I've never had any issues with them. I had the regular KSG since 2014. They cycle minishells no problem too.

Had it for a while. It is a nice toy, build for "wannabe soldiers", but Bruce, if you want to have a serious HD gun, look somewhere else.

I haven't had a lot of range time with it but my impression was that you would be better off with a remington or mossberg (tactical version) for self defense.

Its a solid weapon but i felt that there was a potential under stress to get snagged up when pumping it or when trying to switch to the alternate tube.

Just like anything else though, if you train with it enough, you will have command of it and it will do fine as a sd weapon.

What is nice about it is the fact that you have two separate tubes so you can alternate between buckshot and slugs at will. This will potentially come in handy during a sd situation.

My opinion, not fun to shoot, which outweighs the novelty of cool tactical "bullpup". Not worth the price of admission. Mossberg 500 or Remington 870 and configure it a hundred different ways.

I own the 1301 Comp and am well aware of this "issue" which is user error. If you are really that hard over about it there are a number of companies which make "fixes" for various amounts of money. Stock this is still a better shotgun than a KSG will ever be.

*Edit: The bolt release has also been redesigned in the new generation models which I suggested.

There are reasons the 870 has been with us since 1950 and the 500 since 1960. Figure those reasons out and you will answer your question.

It's my only pump gun. I have severe osteoarthritis and it's difficult to cycle a standard pump like an 870. The vertical grip (I added) allows me to cycle it much more proficiently.

it's a fun toy, but that's all I consider it.

They kick like a mule. Mine ejected the rounds right on my wrist in the same spot every time and hurt like a son of a *****. Mine was real sticky and kind of glitchy to operate. I would grab an 870/590 in a serious situation over a keltec any day of the week.
