How do they measure that? 12ga steel is pretty damn thin but a 12ga shotgun is pretty friggen awesome.

Blue, gauge is determined by how many round lead balls of that bore size it would take to make a pound.
12ga = 12 lead balls that diameter to make 1lb
Makes you think twice about shooting a 4ga huh?

In sheet metal the gage was determined by how many times it went through the rollers thats why as the # gets higher is gets thinner.Comment

The 12 gauge, 16 gauge, 20 & 28 gauge have a long history.
At the time of our Revolution.....
The Brittish Brown Bess was a 75 cal., which was a 12 gauge
The French Charlettville was a 69 cal. which was a 16 gauge.
The 20 gauge was....62 cal. and the 28 gauge was a 54 cal., both of these calibers were common in indian trade guns. And in flintlock rifles

A .410 is actually about a 68 gauge. Some say developed out of the .44-40 shotshell made for smoothbore .44's at the turn of the century.
