    Jack rabbit with 12 gauge

I recently traded a pistol to a buddy for his 1964 Browning Lighting O/U 12 gauge w/ 28" barrels, both set skeet choke.
I'm a falconer and love to hunt jacks for extra meat for my birds. I've mostly done this with a 10/22 (non lead rounds) I'd love to get this Browning out for a try at them.
Any advise on ammo brand, load, etc.. would be appreciated. I don't want to use lead, I've seen what happens to a bird with lead poisoning. Not pretty
    Thanks for any help

Use #5 or #6 for Jacks.

      ><

      Beautiful well keep Superposed.

Browning recommends to not use any Steel Shot in the Superposed.

That said, folks do with open chokes and you posted SK/SK chokes which are open chokes

Do some more research and make your own call.

If you decide to use the gun with Steel shot..... Steel .# 4 or 3's 1 1/8 oz or 1 1/4oz #4 or 5 shot in lead are good big rabbit loads

Added.....if your hunting Calif....Steel Shot only for Rabbits...lead is outlawed

Yikes! I wouldn't want to be shooting steel 4 or 5 during the dry season.

Assuming you are in California and don't want to shoot steel, use bismuth.
Steel is about 70% as dense as lead and Bismuth is about 86% as dense as lead.
You can get it at Bass Pro or check your LGS.
Unfortunately, you can't order it from the internet any longer (without the right licenses/permits) in CA.
You can use the same shot size that you would use for lead.

That is a fine-looking weapon. Congratulations on that I would love to have one of those.

Lead poising not an issue since you must use non lead in ca for small game with a shotgun. Are you sure it is skeet and skeet. Never heard of a superposed with 28" barrels in that configuration. I have 2 belgium browning superposed. I do not use steel in my brownings. I hunt with win 101's with steel for waterfowl and chukar and pheasant.

                    ^^^^All of what he said.

Duck/pheasant loads are jack rabbit loads.

Musta been a pretty special pistol as that's a pretty special shotgun.

Here's a pic of the choke markings. From my internet image search they equate too skeet/skeet. Can someone please confirm

                        Looks like Skeet/Skeet to me...

Unless the bird chokes on a lead pellet, I doubt what you've seen is lead poisoning. The same bird that chokes on a lead pellet could choke on a bismuth pellet.

True lead poisoning is caused by dissolved lead, not particulate lead. A rabbit shot with lead pellets will not create a dissolved lead issue.

If you have documented lead poisoning in birds facts, please provide a reference, we'd like to read them. Don't bother sending PETA or US Humane Society propaganda....we've seen it before and it has all been conclusively refuted.
