need some information regarding a pump shotgun

Came across this "Sportsman 12 Pump, Magnum", has a Remington Arms barrel.

I do not have a shotgun, have considered them ( probably change out the barrel to an 18" full choke), just prefer older handguns.

    Thanks

    I think that is basically a pre-Express model 870.
if you're getting a great deal, sure, depending on what you're buying it for.

I bought a Remington Sportsman 12 Magnum Shotgun in 1985 or 1986,,about 1990 or so I had an Older Guy come up and ask me IF I wanted to sell the Gun,,I told him no,,because the Gun was so reliable,,he then proceeded to tell me that Remington DIDN'T make to many of these Guns because they were...

Has a long full choke w/sight ramp barrel, can this barrel be replaced with a much shorter barrel? Preferred short barrel and probable cost?

        Thanks

The Sportsman 12 is/was a transition gun before Rem brought out the Express. It is way better than the current Express seems to be, based on all the *****ing on here about the current Express. I have had a Sportsman for 20 years, bought used around 1998, and it has never jammed or failed to work as intended. I put a synthetic stock set on it and used it a lot for ducks, especially at Wister and for boat hunts. It's not as pretty as my Wingmasters, but it works just as well. It will take any 870 barrel with a 2-3/4" or 3" chamber.

Not much call for a short barrel and full choke. Defensive barrels are typically cylinder (no) choke.

You could have that barrel shortened (it's nothing special) or install any of several factory short barrels.

This is a link to Gun Parts Corporation ( formerly known as Numrich) of their Remington 870 Barrels. ..

I think their prices are a bit high and you might be better just running an ad here in the classified wanted section or altering the one barrel you already have if you don't want two separate barrels , one for hunting and one for defense.

Although Gun Parts Corporation are the biggest you also might get lucky, and possibly a better price, at Jack First gun parts ( they were originally California based but like many others they've left the state).

You can look up their website and phone number but my recommendation is just call and talk to one of the nice people their rather than trying to use their catalog or computer search system.

Out of curiosity what are you paying for this shotgun?
I ask because with the purchase of a new or used barrel you might be better off just buying something that's already the size you want.

I've come to that conclusion also. Nice shotguns come up here many with shorter barrels.
