It's a convenient way to store and carry ammo.
Other option would be ammo pouches.
Bottom line...
Who cares what it looks like as long as it's functional and fits your needs.

Some like them, but they are not for me. I shoot skeet and clays, and have gotten used to a pocket full of shells. I honestly think I am faster with just loose shells in a large pocket, than any elasticized holder. I can reach for them in the same place, and load fast enough.
That said, I also have an Original SOE COP rig. It is neat, but I haven't really practiced much with it. I've also been interested in 3 gun, and have wanted to check out some of the shell caddy options.

When I go shoot clays I usually like to just wear a molle belt with a dump bag filled with shells. The bandolier however is nice to throw over your chest when out on the trail. Cheap and convenient way to carry additional shells IMO.

When I hunt rabbits, I use a WWII era M1 cartridge belt. Each pouch holds three to four 12 gauge, or five 20 gauge. Real easy to carry, secure but quick to get to the ammo, all the weight is not on your gun (in the case of a sling bandolier), rides on your hips very well (if properly adjusted) and built a lot tougher than elasticized loops made in China. I have two always hanging on pegs, one loaded up with 12 and one loaded up with 20 gauge. Truly grab-and-go.
The one I have is WWII issue that I bought at an Army/Navy surplus store for $5 in 1971. I have yet to wear any part of it out, and it has been used A LOT.

Personally I can't standing shotshell holders/bandoliers that have elastic loops for every single round (minus side saddles). They are slow to load, slow to reload your shotgun, and just overall a pain. While I am not a fan of 5.11/VTAC I do think their shotgun shell pouch is among the best and simplest. Simply rip off the top of a 25 round box and drop it in. I use these for upland game hunting where I reload after 3 rounds and it works great. At least in that application I can pull out the box and show a warden that I am lead free.

Dump bag full of shells is my preference. The Safariland ELS shotgun holders are nice too but very 3 gun focused. I'm not sure I would wear it skeet shooting. I have cobra belt with dump pouch that I grab every time for skeet or trap and I've never felt like I needed anything more.God, Guns & Integrity. Prioritize your Priorities.Comment

I use Competition Carriers and Velcro Side Saddles for 3 Gun. I have 3 of the carriers and 3 of the Velcro side saddle cards for 36 rounds total plus the 8 in the gun. my belt has a dump bag for loose shells too. That's a lot of buckshot and slugs. Weight does come into play with shotgun ammo.
I also have a bandolier which holds about 30 rounds but it is hanging on my HD gun and is a grab and go thing.
There are many ways to carry spare ammo for shotguns. I have belts with holders for individual boxes I use for Skeet and Trap as well as Belt Bags for fired shells cuz I reload them.
The whole idea is to find something that works for you and use it and practice with it until you are comfortable with it. If it doesn't work out, don't quit, find something else.
Repeat until satisfied.

In my trunk along with the trunk shotgun I keep a stash of shells in a messenger style shoulder bag. It will hold a ton of shells and very easy to grab a handful when you need.

I use to have two really nice leather ones that would hold 25 rounds each.
Used them while duck hunting,.......came in real handy.
Just hang the blind.....right in front of you.....great way of holding ammo for re-loading in a hurry.
Did take some practice thought!
