Sporting Clays Choke Question

Last April I won a Weatherby Orion 26" over/under. Put it in the safe and basically forgot about it. My daughter's school (private) has a sporting clays fundraiser in the spring. I've never shot clays, only trap using my trusty 870.

I realize that 26" isn't the optimum length for clays but I won it on a single $20 ticket... Anyways, I'm looking at extended chokes to make it quicker to change and give me just a tiny bit more length. I'm hoping to get a lesson or 2 before going. I'm not planning to win, just don't want to be last...

The question is ported or non ported? Is there a big difference between the manufacturers?

Carlson chokes should have you covered. They have 'em. A Weatherby Orion for a $20.00 raffle ticket? Sweet! You're going to enjoy that gun. You do not need ported.

They are also louder and more expensive. Your wallet and the people you shoot with will thank you for not having ported chokes.

It’s an O/U, so you already have 2 choke choices. No real need to make quick changes to what you have installed. Try shooting a couple rounds with the chokes you have (IC & M).

Where you located OP. There might be weekly shoots depending where you are.

I've been shooting sporting clays for the last 5 months with a full choke and have progressed decently shooting at least 10 more each time out.

Trigger time is really the deal maker here. The more you shoot the more you will understand how it all works. Choke would follow not too far behind that.

Like my buddy said. When youre on youre no matter what choke your using.

Ported just makes them harder to clean.

I received a set of ported chokes when I bought a used Beretta 686 last year.

The ports were clogged with a substance that I believe is melted wads. It wasn't black soot.

I had to force a nail into each port to remove the substance.

The chokes showed a lot more use than the gun did so I assume they came from another gun.

I shoot with a lot of guys who have fixed chokes on their older single shot P and K guns.

Their advice to me early on (semi-jokingly) was, "any choke is fine as long as it is a full choke"

I only shoot full choke on 16 yard trap and Handicap Trap.

I mix it up on 5-stand and sporting clays.

Skeet chokes for skeet.

I'm in Kings County about 35 miles south of Fresno. No clay courses locally, however, Lemoore does have a skeet and trap range.

I agree with the other posters that you only really need ic and modified chokes for almost every clay you will see. I was messing around with chokes and Corey Moore, who is a fenominal shooter, said just shoot those 2 for any clay on his range. They help guys who shoot thousands of rounds a month. For the rest of us, it just gets in our heads.

Also, 26 inches are fine. I shoot a 26 inch ou and love it.

I used to live in Lemoore, one of the biggest if not the biggest Trap Shoots in California is in Kingsburg. Trap shooters from all over attended the week long event.

Bakersfield has trap, skeet, 5-stand and Sporting.

You will find as you become a better shooter you will be changing chokes a lot less. New clay shooters don't put enough faith in Improved Cylinder for most targets.
That being said the extended chokes make it easy and quick to change if you need to.
Briley makes some good products, but there are plenty of others available.
For sporting clays what works for me is Improved Cylinder in both barrels and I use #8 shot most of the course. If targets are really close I will shoot #9 and for the rabbit and further out targets #7 1/2 will work.
The rabbit targets are harder than the flyers and I think the 7 1/2 carry a bit more punch for the bunny targets.
Just get out and keep shooting to make the most of it.
