Interested in getting one,how does it compare to the 870 police?

There are others here with more experience than I, but.....
The Police has a metal trigger plate, non-MIM extractor, beefier springs, and maybe a couple of other small things. Oh, and it says police on the side.

I was originally looking for a police and chose to buy a beat up 870 and go through it, changing the springs, extractor, and the fore-arm to the police spec parts. I have the poly trigger plate. There are differing thoughts about that: many say the poly is better as it's just as robust and provides a level of lubrication. Some insist on all metal, but the metal used is not necessarily stronger.

I guess my point is that for home defense I couldn't see spending the extra money on a police magnum when what I have is every bit as good. And it was a fun project.

As far as the cost of a Police Magnum, I bought mine used on gunbroker.com for $250. In addition to what CJJohn wrote, Police 870s have a more stringent assembly process and quality control.

This is true, and if I remember correctly the Police Magnum barrel is thinker.

I'd say go with a police mag you can usually find them pretty cheap if you find a police trade in. Great shotguns! Mine came with the factory magazine extension and rifle sights

Remington is having a 35% off sale right now. With the Remington sale and Bass Pro/Dicks sales, I’d say pick up an 870 express for hunting/clays and then make a HD model to your liking.

The only 870 I'd steer clear of is the one with the full length mag tube ~
Besides that, they're all the same. If he's not burnt out, Aippi will be along shortly to clear up any confusion...... If not, PM him ~ the man eats, sleeps & builds 870's

My 1986 AIP 870 police HD is the most dependable weapon I have EVER owned and will pass onto my grandkids in years to come

If your going to shoot the gun alot get the police. Either will be just fine. I have the 870 tactical with ghost rings sight. I shoot it alot over 500 rounds for slugs buck and bird shot. Has the poly trigger. No issues and has the mimm extractor which had no issues. Just get a sling and mount a flash light and your good. Here is my 870 https://youtu.be/efGnchtkhT0

The magpul stock is a nice upgrade im undecieded if ill go back to it or id ill keep the pistol grip stock i have.

So wrong so often anytime people post on the Express. There is one spring different between the 6+1 Express and the 6+1 Police and both cost $4.25. What you say? Then why does not Remington put the same one they put in all their guns. The answer is that want you to believe the Police is made with heavier parts and then people will post on forums how the Police is build with more robust parts. But every part in the Police is the same as every other 870 except for that little spring and the MIM extractor of the Express. And no, the Police barrel are no thicker. The 18.5" BS Parkerized Police barrel retails for $116 from Remington. The 18.5" Bead sight Express barrel retails for $134 from Remington. Would a thicker barrel cost so much less?

If you don't need the Parkerized finish, and you don't for a gun that lives in the house with you. Get the HD and spend the difference on ammo so you can get trigger time or some training.

OH, and every gun that leaves that factory goes through the exact same inspections. People read that mess about the 21 point inspection on the Police and use that to justify the extra cost, yet no where on there does it say "ONLY THE POLICE. All inspections are done and kept on every Remington gun incase of a law suit and all are the same.

So, why do they use a different extractor? I would think the additional cost of producing and keeping inventory of different parts would negate any cost savings. Also, isn't the Police trigger housing metal as opposed to the plastic one my Express has? Is there any advantage to going to the metal item? I see the Police one advertised for sale on Brownell's.

They need the Marketing of heavier parts to sell the gun. The 4 shot magazine spring that comes in the Wingmaster and Express cost $4.25.
A true upgrade in the Police other then the finish is the 4 shot Police Long Magazine spring. It really kicks the shells back on the carrier. It also cost $4.25. So again, why don't they put the Police Long in all their 870's? Answer, Marketing.

The polymer Trigger plate assembly is superior to the cast aluminum trigger plate assembly. It is far more durable and it stays cleaner as the polymer has fewer pores to hold oil on assembly and thus collect gunk. The plungers in the polymer assembly are metal but move inside slick polymer channels were the in the cast assemblies they move in metal channels and thus do not move as efficiently. The cast assembly is painted and every little scratch shows up silver, but the polymer is black all the way through so scratches don't show up. I see no advantage to the cast trigger plate assemblies and every advantage to the polymer.

In a post like this on Glock Talk shotgun forum a guy posted that none of that matters as he is not going to have any plastic on his gun so he bought the 870 Police. I posted back asking did he realize he was on Glock Talk????????

Another misconception is that only Express has MIM parts. Every 870 has MIM parts so all this fuss about the MIM extractor is misguided as once someone realizes there is only one 870 and they differ only by finish, furniture and one or two small parts they can make knowledgeable decision on which model to get to fit their need the best. Remington is coming back and some of the issues of the past few years were due to turn over and they learning curve is coming back to the quality that have become to expect. Depending on an 870 for 40 years now in for either duty or for protection of my cilvian life and property makes quality a major issue for me. I am please to see them getting back to the 870 that has sold 11 million guns.

Let me come out of left field a little. Shotguns are fun, a slug gun is not fun. It's not fun to shoot with slugs or buckshot. Busting clay targets is fun. So why not get a gun that you can use for more than one purpose. Buy a 26 inch 870, whatever model your budget can afford and go out and shoot some flying targets. Do this often enough and you'll know that gun inside and out, and working the gun will happen without thinking about it.
