20 gauge vs 12 gauge shell prices

I have always shot only 12 gauge, but am thinking about buying my 12 yer old daughter a 20 gauge for Christmas. I am wondering about the pricing on target shells as compared to 12 gauge.

I usually just buy shotgun shells at Walmart (or sometimes Dick's) rather than ordering online. Walmart prices are pretty hard to beat, and they usually had shotgun shells even during the last ammo drought.

If I recall, they usually carried the same lines in both 12 gauge and 20 gauge. Is the pricing the same on 20 gauge, or do you pay a premium because 20 guage are less common?

I am wondering if I should order, say, 1000 rounds online while I still can, or if I can count on Wally's to not price gouge. I am pretty well stocked on everything I shoot so this would likely be my last hurrah online.

Yep same per 100. Sometimes I've noticed the availability isn't quite there though but I haven't been buying 20 gauge for a while. The hard part is finding specialty ammo in 20 gauge.

Order now what you think you will need, because after 1/1 the dealers know we will have few practical choices. At that point, you'll have to take what you can get at their asking prices, or jump through a lot of hoops to get good prices or to get anything unusual. The market may settle down a little after a few months, but combine the internet ban with the lead ban, and we are pretty well screwed for a lot of hunting loads.

SandHill, If you buy the Wal-Mart 100packs, get the Federal"Field and Target" multi-purpose loads. They come in 7.5's in 20ga and possibly in 8's. Stay away from the Win "Universal's". Junk. Good for you getting your daughter a shotgun.

I'm not sure I want to light up that particular flame war just now. I will say that yesterday she was shooting a 12 gauge Winchester Defender with an 18 inch cylinder bore barrel and 12 inch LOP. I had added some weight to the stock and if you loaded the mag all the way up I suspect the gun weighed more than she does soaking wet. Aside from the LOP, which was good for her, it is not the ideal trap gun. She did just fine, pulverized quite a few clays. Quite a few more flew away laughing at us, but we weren't keeping score. She went through all 100 rounds I brought for her, loved it, and would have done more. I guess she needs a shotgun.

Problem is, my Walmart does not stock the low recoil loads consistently, so I think I'm better off getting her a 20 gauge.

Benelli Montefeltro with a thin limbsaver pad is a nice set up. Friend shoots a Beretta a400. On the cheap end, there’s a pump - an 870. I just picked up a Benelli Nova (camo) for doves and possibly duck hunting.

Prices are basically the same between 12 & 20. Go to 16 or 28 and prices are just stupid!

Bought my 13 yr old daughter a 20ga SX3 (youth) a couple months ago. Yesterday was her 2nd time shooting it. I threw clays and let her shoot. She chipped a few, crushed a few, and missed a few more. She had fun! Next up are lessons.
She tried the AA low recoil shells, but shoots standard 2 1/2 Dram 7/8oz of 7.5’s & 8’s without any issues.

I would say that in most cases 12 is cheaper but not by enough to make a difference. I like 20 over 12 as a correctly scaled 20 is a bette handling gun.
