Remington 870 home defense

I've been looking at the 870 express deal at turner's. While talking with a client they mentioned they had an 870home defense with 100 shells and case they wanted to for 300. I can't find much on home defense other than like the 870 It is budget shotgun. Is even more budget than the express and would 300 be decent deal?

A little more info would be helpful. You don't tell us what you plan to use it for, your criteria and preferences, what condition the gun from you client is in, or whether the 100 rounds are deluxe buckshot or cheap target loads.

Turner's has the "Express Tac" on sale at $329 after rebate and the "Home Defense" for 319 after rebate. I expect the build quality is the same on both - not a piece of art, but great value for the money. The Tac had a seven round mag but 20 inch barrel, while the Home Defense is handier with an 18.5 inch barrel but only six rounds in the tube.

If you buy from your client you will save ~9% in sales tax but pay $10 more on the DROS. Call it net $20-30 more expensive for the new one of your choice at Truner's. If it was me, I'd be down at Turner's buying the Home Defense with the wood stock right now.

300 is a decent deal. I believe 870 has a rebate right now: $50 on ALL 870 shotguns:

One thing I should mention, I once had an 870 as and HD gun.

As a lefty, you have to break your grip to activate the safety OR hit the safety before getting into your shooting position.

If I could do it again, I would likely get the Mossy 500 because of the safety (my wife is Right handed) so we could hypothetically be in shooting position and hit the safety without breaking the shooting hold. And it's lighter. VERY subtle difference, which is obviously more catered to my situation.

BUT something you should think about..... if your significant other can handle the 870 weight if needed. The mossy is lighter. And which handedness you both are.

Also, Big 5 sometimes sells the Mossy 500 with 2 barrels.


The 870 is a GREAT shotgun don't get me wrong...

I'm assuming by "home defense" you are referring to the "hardwood home defense" or equivalent line, which is basically just a rebranded 870 Express. They're good to go. IMO people really play up the differences between the Express and Police Magnum/Wingmaster models. If you're looking for a meat and potatoes no frills HD shotgun then I'd say go for it. 300 is a good price.

Thanks guys. Yes, it's function would be HD. Part of the reason for keeping it budget, and I've only ever heard the 870 is good to go any price. Wifey is a sturdy gun enthusiast girl and has shot 12gauge before.

The pricing appears to be good and I'm wondering if it's used, with that pricing being so good.

Just try to envision what you want before you buy and whether modifications are anticipated. If mods are anticipated, plan these out prior to buying so as not to run into complications. Some mods folks have later considered are: lights; slings; ghost ring sights; ammo carriers; mag extensions; different stocks; and other stuff.

If you're fairly sure you'll leave the gun as-is, and occasionally shoot it, but mainly have it available, then it'll be fine once function-fired/tested to ensure reliability/patterning/and one's capability.

Another way to look at it is if you're only going to buy one, then perhaps you could afford to spend more, even $1,000+, and buy what you really can foresee wanting right from the beginning.

Sounds like a decent deal, but I'd be wary of new 870 Express for HD.

I had a pre-Freedom model and it would jam on cheap Win low brass, but ran fine on almost as cheap Rem low brass.

I was told this is because the chambers on the cheap guns are rough, and only one extractor vs 2 on Mossberg.

I didn't like the loose tin can feel of the Mossy, or the way it shoulders, and like the feel and hoist of the Rem, but for a "it just has to work" close range, that one time, I'd avoid new/cheap/untuned 870.

if you have already have or owned a 870 hunting type it is a lot cheap to buy the barrel and stocks
