All serious shotgun operators know that the Rockatansky is the only choice in shotguns.

When it comes to self defense, use what you are most proficient with. No matter how good the tool, if you're better with something else use that something else. Or put another way, whatever you go with take some training courses and get VERY good with it.

With that in mind, everything you suggested and that others suggested above are great options. I'd be proud to own any of them.

My current tactical shotgun was a gift, so not my "choice" per say but a great shotgun none the less. A Mossberg 500 12GA I received Christmas past. I really, really like it. It is great, but I am better with handguns and ARs than I am a shotgun. Considerably so. Therefore it is not the first thing I would reach for if something went bump in the night. I keep telling myself I will sign-up for an LMS Defense Tactical Shotgun course to get my scattergun training up to par. Never seem to get around to it. Yet whenever the opportunity comes up to take another pistol course I'm always game. Guess that's my thing. Consciously or not.

If the threat is still coming after a couple shells of sport shot and then still coming after some 00 buck, it's time to start with some slugs and sabot rounds.
A great summary of what experienced shotgun trainers tell you what NOT to do.

It's already been explained why you have a shell in battery prior to approaching the "POS".

Your job is to STOP the POS. That's not workable when your "stacking the shells in degrees of urgency", whatever the hell that means.

You have zero idea as to urgency with a stranger in your home. Birdshot is not recommended for any game but birds.

I'd recommend taking a class or 2 from someone who's btdt.

True wealth is time. Time to enjoy life.

Can't go wrong with an 870 or 500. Affordable and reliable. I keep my 500 loaded with Federal Tactical LE - 00 Buck with Flite Control. Amazing round for all who dare to enter my home uninvited.

At living room distances, Fed LE 00 patterns about 1/2 the size of Winchesster 00. I like it because it's less prone to flyers and delivers more energy in a 8" area.

Bad guys wetting their pants...or vacating your house...at the sound of a pump shotgun is somebody watching way too many Hollywood movies. Now there's a chance of course that they will run. But I sure as hell wouldn't bet my life on it. And they may run just the same by turning on a light or yelling, "get the EFF out of my house." And as your friend suggested, that gun should already be well charged by the time they're close enough to hear it.

With that said, many people feel that a pump gun is more reliable than a semi-auto shotgun. Except I've seen plenty of pump guns short stroked and flat out jam. Moreover, we don't seem to have a problem trusting our lives to semi-auto pistols. So why wouldn't we trust a properly vetted semi-auto shotgun?

Most people are also faster with a semi auto than a pump gun. And yes, there are certainly some people that can run a pump gun extremely well. Most people, however, don't practice with their shotgun enough to develop that level of skill.

A really good budget semi-auto is the CZ 712 Utility.
It's light, handy and very reliable.
re; Racking your shotgun If the intruder is in your bedroom, its a bit late to load. If the BG is in your kitchen, racking your shotgun lets him know where you are. OTOH, it also lets him know you are awake and armed. Maybe he hightails it then which is great, Mission Accomplished, but if he doesn't, you're still ready and loaded. IMHO the job is get the crook out of my house.
If the intruder is in my bedroom before I know it, I've already lost and if I survive it, my dogs will get the beatings of their lives for not waking me up in the first place.

                            Not news.

One is assuming that 8" area is on the perp.

But I'm sure everyone here shoots with utmost accuracy on dangerous moving targets in the dark in their boxers when woken up at 3 a.m.

The idea of shuckin' in a round into a shotgun to scare the bad guy is a dumb idea. It only tells them where you are and gets them ready to pop off a round at you!
It's 4 in the mag and one up the tube.............then all you have to do is let off on the safety and your ready to rock and roll (if you need too!).
The idea is to let them come to you.......not the other way around.....your not a cop, trained to do such work.
