Recommendations on Hunting/Trap semi auto 12GA

I just acquired my hunting license and will be going with a couple experienced hunters dove and duck hunting this season. I am in the market for a new Semi-auto 12 gauge and have been leaning towards the Fabarm L4S hunting series, either the Initial Hunter or the Grey Hunter. Budget $1200-1800. I rented one and it fits excellent, shots accurately and is pretty light.

Can anyone recommend another shotgun to try out or at least hold? I shot trap a lot and would like a gun to cross over to hunting as well. I originally was looking at a Benelli Supersport but dont see that being a good field gun; I plan to use it 90% trap/sporting clays, 10% shooting birds.

    Thoughts, recommendations etc?

Sure, meet me at Raahauge's in Corona, and I've got a few different ones you can try out

I should add, if you're new to shotguns, you might not be the best judge of shotgun fit.

      Not new to shotguns.

      I own/shoot

930 Jm Tactical, put about 1,000 rounds through it.

Winchester 1300 with a 28" barrel ( have shot about 2,500-3,000 rounds through it, all shooting trap)

Ruger red label in 20 GA O/U, put about 500 rounds through it.

I've shot Limited quantities through about a dozen other scatter guns from 1897's to Remington's to Weatherby.

I like the Fabarm feel the best of anything I haven't shot. It's also low recoil and due to a back injury, that is high on my priority list.

If you like the Benelli Supersport for clay shooting but it is too reflective for field use, check out the Benelli Cordoba. It is basically a Supersport with a different exterior.

I shoot trap a lot with a Benelli Supersport, it is not exactly a "traditional" trap gun (more of a sporting clay gun) but it works and I do ok with it.

Beretta A400. I have a 20ga Xplor Action and it's my favorite shotgun.

                ><

If I was in your shoes, 90% Trap and 10% hunting, go with what you like for Trap as your new toy and use the Win 1300 for hunting.

The best gun for YOU is the one that you can put hits on targets with consistency and confidence.

                  Thanks fellas for the suggestions.

The only problem I have with hunting with the 1300 is California now requires steel shot, right? I was under the impression Steel shot tears up barrels not designed to handle steel...is that fud?

Most guns made after 1985 or so are already designed for steel, the 1300 is GTO

Use no choke tighter then MOD with steel shot

Also if your going to hunt Dove and Duck, get out to a Sporting Clays range or at least a Skeet range and do some practicing.....Trap is good practice for flushing birds like Pheasant and Quail ......you won't see Trap shots with Dove and Duck....mostly overhead, incoming, outgoing, and crossing

Thanks for the tip. I have shot sporting clays about 25-30 times, I will spend more time out there from now on.

I don't think he'll be able to find one of those to try out.

If you're asking about a trap gun on a web forum, you shouldn't be buying a trap gun.

If you're asking about a gun to shot trap with, you've come to the right place.

Always looking for vintage Winchester and Marlin lever action rifles. Looking to sell? Know of one for sale? Drop me a line!
