    M4 vs M1014 shooting slugs

A recently purchased an M4 and my buddy, to be different, just ordered one of the limited edition M1014s.

I read that while mine can use different chokes, the M1014 has a fixed choke.
My friend was excited to shoot slugs but just called Benelli to confirm that he could with the fixed choke. They told him that he cannot shoot slugs with the M1014. Was shocked to hear this. Now he's thinking of cancelling his order.

Is this true or is Benelli just playing it safe?

Am I good to go with slugs in my M4? Do I need to remove the choke?

Appreciate any experience from those of you with these guns!

According to the Benelli website, the M1014 has a fixed Modified Choke. Most people would use at most an IC choke for slugs. I have heard of people running slugs through a modified choke, and I imagine the US military does as well as LEO. This website thinks it's OK, but they are not providing warranty support. lol http://www.americanspecialops.com/sp...14-shotgun.php

I've shot slugs through my Benelli Supersport with a Modified choke on it, no problem. Tell your friend to relax, slugs will work just fine with a fixed Modified choke. Modified choke is one of those "middle ground" choke and everything works with it.

For you, DO NOT remove the choke, except for cleaning the choke itself ONLY. Do not shoot without a choke in the barrel, and do not clean the barrel without a choke in it. You will easily damage the threads for the choke.

Oh and talking about slugs, Freedom Munitions is having a sale for their copper plated slugs and free shipping for purchases over $150.

High-quality, USA-made ammo for sale online, including bulk orders! Get new and remanufactured rounds at great prices. Shop 9mm, 223, 380, .45, 10mm, and more.

If you shoot a lot of non-plated lead slugs, get a few of those copper plated ones and shoot them through your shotgun when you're done. It'll make cleaning easier as the copper plated slugs will scrape off lead fouling in the barrel for you.

You can pick up a cylinder choke for a few bucks, and it's worth it for the piece of mind. As others have stated, do not shoot with just the threads.

A modified choke is (roughly) 0.020 smaller than the bore. A soft lead slug with ribs/vanes shouldn't have any problems getting swagged down 0.020".
