Saiga 12

Hi. I'm new to this forum, and am looking for some info on my shotgun. I currently own a Saiga 12, and do not have it in this state, as I'm not sure of the legal status of this gun.

I've been given mixed reviews on it from several law enforcement people, some tell me its legal, others tell me its not. The general concensus is that it isn't but its so close, I'm really rolling the dice by having it. Any thoughts or ideas on this would be a great help.

Per the CADOJ web site:

12276.1. (a) Notwithstanding Section 12276, "assault weapon" shall also mean any of the following:
.....[deletia]....
(6) A semiautomatic shotgun that has both of the following:
(A) A folding or telescoping stock.
(B) A pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon, thumbhole stock, or vertical handgrip.
(7) A semiautomatic shotgun that has the ability to accept a detachable magazine.
(8) Any shotgun with a revolving cylinder.

As the Saiga looks to have a detachable magazine, it would seem to be banned in California. Plus it looks too AK-ish and way too much fun to be legal in California.

I believe it is considered as being built on a AK type action too so that right there makes it not legal in California.

12276.1 only bans semi auto shotguns with a detachable mag, however, pump action shotguns with detachable mags are exempt, like the one by Valtro USA:



And it's made right here in this Commie State!

Another thing you can do is get a Remington 1100 or Benelli semi-auto shotgun with Choate or Tac Star mag extensions and use Armstec Speedloaders.
