Worst barrel pitting in new gun - WTF?

I just picked up a new Mossberg 930 Field/Security combo (28" and 18.5" barrels) and took it to my local indoor range today. I only shot 30 rounds of slugs (Winchester Super X and Fiocchi Exacta Aero).

It shot and cycled great and was very accurate; however, once I got home and broke it down to clean it this is what I saw - the worst pitting/scratching I've ever seen in any barrel I've ever looked down. Additionally, the buffer tube is already getting scratched/deformed right where the gas-piston slides over.

Is this normal with slugs? (This is my first experience with slugs - all previous experience is with birdshot and waterfowl hunting). I've already contacted Mossberg who, after I explained what I ma seeing, they said this is not normal and will need to replace both barrels and buffer tube.

It's not barrel pitting, it's lead from the slugs.

I have a 930 DC for upland game. I've shot a good number of regular shells thru it: #6 and #7.5 lead and some #6 steel. Nothing like that. Not at all.
All that from shooting slugs? Man.

Looks like normal lead fouling. Just clean it with 0000 steel wool and a drill.
        Always worked for me.

My Beretta 1201FP has a chrome lined bore. After my range visit, it is pretty dirty, as well as some leading streaks from buckshot. Does the chrome lined bore present any special considerations in choice of solvent or brush?

Yeah, I have friends who've shot slugs and have never seen this in any of their barrels... doesn't look/feel like just lead buildup but like it took chunks out of the barrel itself.

:-) Lead will NEVER be able to take any chunks from steel. It is too soft.

Thanks for the input, I don't have steel wool on hand but I tried running my brass brush, bore snake, and patches through it and it did nothing...

even looking at the muzzle of the barrel it looks like its more than lead fouling... at least to my eyes...

Use this method for cleaning lead.

Did you shoot it brand new without cleaning the barrel ?
Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.

                      This is helpful, thank you.

I went to the hardware store and picked up some 0000 steel wool and it seems to have helped a lot using this method. There still appears to be a little fouling remaining just after the chamber seeing it is not perfectly smooth al the way through but its progress.

Should I keep doing this until it's glass smooth?

Nope, first thing I did when I picked it up was take it home, break it down and clean it thoroughly.

This was after a clean and 30 rounds of slugs.

Those concentric rings near the muzzle look like machining marks from the factory. Mossturds are built to a pretty low price point and finishing is not always what it should be. Machine marks will scrub off a lot of lead as the slug travels down the bore, and that seems to be part of the problem. The cheap fix, aside from cleaning, will be to run some emery cloth down the bore on a home made flap wheel. A ball hone (similar to a brake hone) will work better, but may not be necessary.

That will clean out if you put the time and effort into it. Did you clean it before shooting it the first time?

Make sure you call Mossberg customer service. I think that would be the first step in resolving this
