    Vepr 12 featureless

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum but not sure where to put this. Shotgun forum?

I have a Vepr 12 with a thumbhole wooden stock coming from out of state. With the new AW law put on ice for the moment, can the Vepr 12 be made featureless at this moment by covering the hole in the stock like the other Vepr AKs?

If there is no option for going featureless, does the Vepr 12 need a mag lock now?

Thanks. I understand what I need to do with a regular Vepr but don't quite understand the Vepr 12 with the current situation as it stands. Any help? Thanks

I know you cannot have a shotgun with a detachable magazine, and mine is legal with all features except the magazine being fixed (the mag release is shaved flush on mine, much as an HKUMP or a M1A maglock is.

That said post Jan 01,, 2017 it pretty muddy and would not be able to speak on it further without blowing smoke.

That said, I posted a poll in the shotgun forum in this regard. Answers were split - and the only majority I saw was tons of views where people didn't even weigh in with a vote regarding legality post Jan 01, 2017.

You can disable the semi auto functionality. If semi auto is disabled you can run the magazine and thumbhole stock.

There won't be a revise bullet button for an AK style gun because you can't split or break the action easily like an AR.

CA assault weapons laws for shotguns are similar but different than those for rifles. What may be legal for one, may be illegal for another.

A semi-auto shotgun that accepts detachable magazines is an assault weapon. There's no way to make it "featureless".

Prior to importation to CA, the shotgun needs to be configured so that it is not considered an assault weapon.

In order to be CA legal, the semi-auto shotgun:
          1. Can not accept detachable magazines. [PC 30515(a)(7)]
          2. Can not have pistol grip or vertical forward grip or thumbhole stock and a folding/extending stock. [PC 30515(a)(6)]

Technically... As long as it has a "bullet button" style magazine lock with a 10 or less round magazine locked in place, it is still CA legal to import and transfer.

Practically... Because CA DOJ keeps trying to say that "bullet button" style magazine lock are not legal on semi-auto shotguns, most CA FFL dealers are unwilling to handle them.

Therefore, in order to legally acquire it...

If you can find a CA FFL dealer willing to transfer a semi-auto shotgun with a "bullet button" style magazine lock, then you can have it installed with a "bullet button" style magazine lock & a 10 or less round magazine out-of-state and have it imported to that specific CA FFL dealer.

If you can not find a CA FFL dealer willing to transfer a semi-auto shotgun with a "bullet button" style magazine lock, then it will need to be modify into one of the following configurations prior to importation into CA:
          A. Weld/rivet a 10 or less round magazine into the magazine well. This will make it a fixed magazine semi-auto shotgun.
          B. Remove the gas piston and block/plug the gas port. This will make it a manually operated (straight pull bolt-action) shotgun.

Thanks guys, good info. Talked to my FFL and he will transfer the Vepr 12 with a mag lock installed.

Btw, just as an FYI, I had already ordered a mag lock from Carolina Shooting Supplies (they make their own version) which will NOT work with the Vepr 12 because of the magwell even though they advertise as fitting on the Vepr. You need to get the Solar Tactical low profile Gen 2 one.

Just a little information for those still able to source a Vepr 12 and want to go the mag lock route.
