Are Barrels interchangeable on H&R single shots

In looking at a couple of H&R single shot shotguns I have (a 12ga and 20ga model 88), the barrels physically interchange between the 2 receivers and I am wondering if they would fire correctly if the barrels were swapped. I am asking because I would like to get a .410 and was wondering if I could just pick up a compatible .410 barrel for one of the receivers I have.

    TIA

Thanks hogbody74. Did they give any reason for the lack of interchangeability? I am not very familiar with shotguns, but for a single shot I wouldn't think there would be any headspace issues, so maybe there is something else.

Based on what H&R says, I will abandon this path, but I am curious about the reason.

i picked up a few used h&r/nef singles starting a few years ago and had great fun cleaning them up, replacing stocks/forearms and swapping barrels. the last one i got came from a farmer's back door and had hay under the forearm. the short answer is yes for swapping shotgun barrels, but the key is the receiver: sb1 for shotgun and pistol caliber barrels, sb2 for centerfire rifle as well as shotgun barrels.

with the firm's sad demise you should pick up any barrels you can find if cheap enough. even with a limbsaver 12ga is a bit too much oomph for me. 410 handgun defense ammo works great. 20ga is the sweet spot, tho defense ammo, e.g. buckshot is hard to find so i use slugs and #6 game loads.

here is my under the bed 20ga with a cable lock around the receiver and a ready round tucked under the ammo sleeve.
