Black powder Shells

Hello everyone. Anyone know where I can get black powder shotshells? I know Goex used to make them but I believe they have discontinued. I'm not sure about Legal and shipping issues here in California. After all BP is an explosive. What about over the counter? Ive thought about Loading my own but I don't have much reloading experience though I do shoot BP. I did find this place online.

Kent Gamebore BP shells used to be available from Galazan/CSMC, might still be. Get 'em while you can because after 12/31 you'll be SOL on specialty ammo over the internet.

Loading your own with Magtech (or any other) brass shotshells is super easy, and was my gateway into reloading in general.

Here's the super easy way to make 12 gauge BP brass shotshells.
You'll need:
- Black Powder (FFg) or VOLUMETRIC equivalent
- Brass shotshells
- Appropriate primers (large pistol primers for Magtech hulls)
- Hammer
- Punch that fits into the flash hole
- Dowel with a concave end
- Lubed fiber wads one gauge bigger than bore size (if using Magtech)
- Overshot cards 2 gauges bigger than bore size
- Elmer's glue or waterglass.
- Shot dipper that dispenses 1oz or 1-1/8oz lead shot

Loading is simple:
1) Knock out the old primer (if necessary).
2) Put a Large Pistol Primer on a flat hard surface
3) Place shotshell over primer
4) Insert dowl with concave end down (for Magtech hulls anyway)
5) Gently start the primer by pushing down, finish with gentle tap from the hammer
6) Use your 1oz shot scoop to scoop (there's technique to this, I'll address that later) a full scoop load of FFg black powder.
7) Dump powder into shell
8) insert 1 or 2 lubed fiber wads (11 gauge for 12 gauge Magtech hulls)
9) Scoop a full scoop of shot
10) Dump shot into hull
11) Place overshot card (10 gauge for 12 gauge magtech hulls)
12) Use the dowel to ram it home, use a good amount of force, but there's no need to kill it, you just need to make sure there's no air in the powder column.
13) Glue over the top of the card. Elmers dries clear so you can write on the card beforehand.

Technique for dipping powder:
Use a big pile of powder, push the dipper into the pile right side up and let powder flow into the dipper. Use a card to scrape off any powder that is mounding above the dipper. That is a full dipper load, do it just like that and you'll have consistent shells.

Using the 1oz dipper of FFg and shot (#8 or #7.5 specifically) makes a 'square load' of about 2-1/2 dram equivalent, a nice light recoiling clays load and good for birds. Using the 1-1/8 oz dipper makes something more like a 2-3/4 dram equivalent with a 1-1/8oz shot load, a fine dove load (with lead shot).

Not all black powder substitutes are volumetric equivalents. Pyrodex RS is a volumetric equivalent, but weighs less than real black powder. Triple 7 and other subs are generally NOT volumetic equivalent, and for those you'll need a scale to measure our the powder charge.
