Do skeet chokes really help for skeet? And does barrel length play a part too? Between 26-28-30"?

All of the shots taken in skeet are at fast moving clays that are close. You want an open choke so that you have a wider pattern, which increases your chance of a hit. In contrast, shooting a condensed pattern requires you to be more precise. Shorter barrels enable a shooter to more quickly get on target and track a fast moving clay.

As with all things shotgun: it depends.

It depends on you, your shells, your gun's pattern(s) with those shells, and your skills. Cylinder chokes work just fine for many folks. Skeet chokes definitely help choke manufacturers' profit margins.

Neither a skeet choke nor a couple inches of barrel length will be deterministic in the learning stages of the game.

My understanding was that shorter barrels like the 26" were more popular when shooting from a low position because they were quick to mount and point. Old competition shooter told me they even had shirts with marks on the side; the butt of the shotgun had to be below the mark on the shirt when you called for a bird.

Most people shoot longer barrels now since high mount is used; the shotgun is already shouldered.

My Rem 1100-Skeet model is older and came with 26" Skeet barrel with fixed choke. I like it better now with 30" barrel, but I am not a competitive shooter.
