    semi auto

Do most semi auto shotguns cycle better with 00 buck and slugs. I have one that would fail to eject when I used bird shot and target shells. I didn't shoot it for about a year thinking there was something wrong with the shotgun. I pulled it out again about a year later and shot nothing but buck and slugs. It ran perfectly.

Nothing is wrong with the gun. Do more research on shotgun shells.

The gun's cycling system does not cycle the action based on the size of the projectile going down the barrel.

Some guns don't like "light" loads and others need to be "broken in" to handle light loads reliably. Some require adjustments to either handle light target loads or not beat themselves up with heavy field loads. Slugs and buck tend to be loaded toward the top end and many bird shot loads are loaded toward the lower end.

You don't mention what shotgun this is or what the specs were on the "birdshot". Newer ones tend to be more forgiving on the load spectrum.

How light is light? How does one tell the difference between full house, semi light, light and very light shotshells?

Hint: Its all found on the box of shells

One of my semi-auto shotguns took 1,200 rounds of high base to break in. Now it'll shoot anything, but it sure took its time breaking in. YMMV.

Thanks for the feedback. By the way, its an Escort magnum. Nothing special. Just something to blast away with.

Check your shells. Italian hulls tend to be loose and the brass has very rounded rims. Your ejector claws may be slipping off those rims preventing them from being spit out of your semi-auto.

Winchester, Federal, Remington shells work better in my semi-auto.
