    O/u or semi auto?

Just got into trap skeet and sporting, looking to get a new shotgun. Any suggestions on either an o/u or semi auto between 400-700$. It would double as my hunting shotgun too, seeing as my wife just told me she wants to hunt with me this year and she wants the 870

for clay games an O/U is the preferred gun for a variety of reasons. for trap the O/U won't eject shells and the guy to your right like a semi-auto does. Also for sporting you have the option of using different chokes and varying your barrel fire order depending on the presentation.

However, you're not going to get a decent o/u for 400-700. A used browning or beretta will likely start in the $1K range or more.

$700 is right at the mark for a good semi auto. a couple to look at include the beretta a300, weatherby sa-08.

You do NOT want to take a nice shotgun (o/u or semi) hunting.

        Why not?

That's what they are built for... To use...

You can pick up a Remington 1100 or 1187 for around $900 (in 12ga). Newer models have screw-in chokes that will allow you to it for trap/skeet/sporting. Both of these are gas auto's and recoil is very manageable, even with 3dram target or 3 1/4 dram hunting loads.

If you do shoot trap, they make shell catcher that attaches to the receiver, it traps the shell it doesn't eject across to the person next to you. Easily installed and removed.

A gas operated semi will be softer recoil for your wife. A pump is fine, but in the long run if your wife will end hunting with you, the softer recoil will be a benefit.

Good thing to consider she's been shooting a pump 12g since she was a kid so she's pretty good with the recoil

Then recoil is not an issue.

Get the gun that you both like best.

... and maybe he should have clear vinyl couch and chair covers (just like grandma had) on the living room furniture and only allow guests to use the living room.

You can probably find a used one for less. Add a remington supercell pad to it and it will shoot even softer.

In total agreement here. And BOBGBA, you're correct in believing that I really did want a 20ga S/A. Hi-jack over.

My hunting guns have fallen in the water, been used as a tent stake, and used as a paddle.

Maybe the petting zoo where you guys hunt is a little safer than where I go?

Semi auto - I've shot a lot of birds with that third shot. Not to mention, I don't have worry about it getting a little beat up. O/U kick too much and loading/unloading is awkward in a blind.
