Drilling/Combination Rifles

Looking for more info on a nice European Drilling/Combination rifle. Can anyone recommend a good caliber combination to go with? I'm thinking of a rifled 12Gauge on top, and a 7mm sized caliber below it. I know there are a lot of different combinations out there.

Anybody own any, and can give me an owners opinion?

I've seen modern ones 12ga and .308.

Very pricey.

Keep in mind the rifle and shotgun barrels are not designed for any range shooting.

The shotgun is set up for 60yds the rifle about 120 yds. I got more accuracy out of a H&R Rifle.

I thought I needed one of these. The actual product failed to impress.

I have Ruger #1 30-06 converted to 35 Whelen she is one of my prize rifles. Found at the OC Gun Show for a song years ago.

Ya I would plan on taking the Combination out hunting, not for range use.
But, ya from what I've seen most go for 3k+.

I love my Ruger No.1's! But I'm always looking to add to the calibers I have now.
So far the ones I have are 25-06, .300 Win Mag, .375H&H and .458Win mag.

A classic European combo would be 16 gauge and 8x57 JRS.

No help with the drilling. Sorry. But, curious as to what Sako bolt action you are looking for. Good luck in your search.

How much do you want to spend?

Krieghoff and J.P Sauer make some quality Drillings. However, you will spend $10k+ if you are not careful. Drilling "generally" come in 12ga, 16ga, and 20ga.
For a 7mm, you can find (or order) a drilling in 7mm mauser R (Rimmed).

Also, drillings come in a plethora of barrel geometries so you can get lost in the details.
SXS
2 shotgun barrels above a rifle barrel.
2 rifle barrels above a shotgun barrel (mostly used in African for dangerous game)
1 rifle barrel above over 2 shotgun barrels.

O/U
shotgun over, medium bore rifle below and a small bore rifle along the side,
etc.

There are two problems I have run into with Drillings.
1.) They can be overly heavy with two 12ga barrels over a rifle barrel, and
2.) Generally speaking, you can not use them for hunting birds on public lands. I have heard that some jurisdictions do not allow a rifle barrel when hunting birds (Even without ammunition for the rifle barrel.) (Turkey season)

Other then these two issues, they are great works of art.

Personally, I am looking for a Vierling. (four barreled set up).

My groomsmen gave me a Savage 24F in .223/12ga below when I got married.

It's faaaar from a nice Euro drilling, but like it an awful lot. It's pretty sweet for calling predators.

CZ had a nice looking 12 gauge and .308 or 30-06 combo gun. Apparently it was introduced or reintroduced in 2015 but it may already be discontinued as it doesn't show up in their current catalog.

...but if you are, there's a very nice Valmet 12 over .308 on arfcom...link is here and price is perfect. I'd hop on it.

Valmet drilling
