Today I finally got to try out my Maverick 88. Thought it would be a good idea to remove the factory stock and install a Mossberg pistol grip. What a bad decision that turned out to be. From the start my hand was in pain. I was able to finish off the box of 00 Buck, but man that was brutal. Lol afterwards I was seriously considering selling the shotgun I was so turned off by it. I will now be going back to the factory stock. Anyway just say no to pistol grips on shotguns.

Did you install one of those pistol grip only stock or one of those that still has the shoulder stock but also has a pistol grip (e.g., like a AR-15)?
If it is a pistol grip only stock, all the recoil is going into your hand and it'll hurt.Comment

Installed a pistol grip only, no shoulder stock. The webbing of my hand still hurts. Its all swollen.Fernando became an American the courageous way. By outrunning the speed boat.Comment

I should have tried the factory stock before the pistol grip. Now i'm scared to shoot this thing.Fernando became an American the courageous way. By outrunning the speed boat.Comment

Hold it with the pistol grip firmly anchored to your hip so your hip takes the kick. It's a SD tool. How likely is it that you would fire it more then a few times in a SD situation? Even my wife doesn't complain when she shoots it from the hip.Only slaves don't need guns

A cutoff monte carlo style is gonna be better than a pistol grip. Also, have to pull the gun apart when shooting like that.Comment

Try a knox recoil control pistol grip.Comment

If pistol grips were good idea on 12 Gauge Shotguns, John Moses Browning would've invented it first.
Yes, they're fun and you can hit the general area but they are not good for aiming.
and I'm speaking from experience of Mossberg's pistol grip 12 gauge specifically.
If you have to go that way due to small storage areas or maybe you're carrying it in a truck or car, (legally) yet in a small space, get one that has a folding out full stock, if that's allowed in your area.
Even Bonnie and Clyde left a little bit of stock on their shotguns.
( Although that might've been to help their "whippet guns" / cut down Browning auto 5 / Remington model 11 style shotgun cycle.)Comment

To each his own, I prefer to know what and where I'm going to hit,
especially if I might have to be shooting in my own house with loved ones around or even possibly near the bad guy.
Why not have a pistol grip with a fold out stock as I and others suggested above.
You gain a lot and lose very little.
In a home defense situation your adrenaline is going to be pumping, the locations of your loved ones might not be where you think they should be (maybe they heard something/the burglar and went to investigate) and you're thinking or aim might not be the best so why not take advantage of of things we know to be true...
Shoulder fired weapons are more accurate for most people.
I'm not telling you not to do what works best for you, I just know what works best for me.
(A friend and I've done some testing on MOVING targets with Mossberg 500 pistol grip shotguns and I found out what works better for me.)
All I was stating is for most people accuracy will normally suffer a bit using just a pistol grip over a shoulder stock (with or without a pistol grip attached to it).
There's also the slight pain and the web of the hand but I don't think that's as important of a issue when it comes to self-defense (other then you probably won't train as much as you should).Comment
