Opinions on CZ over under

I was entertaining the idea of an over under shotgun to use for sporting clays. I checked out a CZ wingshooter at my local gun store. Looked to be a good starting point. My thought is that I will use it as a starter gun and eventually if I feel the need to upgrade I can use this as a field gun.

Anyone have thoughts on the cheaper CZ shotguns? I know they are not back bored. Is back boring that important?

IMHO you'd be better off with a field Citori. Gently used used ones can be had for $1K. And 10K rounds later, about the same.

Backboring ain't all that and a bag of chips.

Back boring has no discernable advantage to the average shooter. Look over some of the past threads, we've discussed CZ shotguns to death.

If you're thinking of buying a CZ shotgun, it's the right shotgun for you. If you needed a high volume shotgun, you'd be asking about something else.

A few years ago I was in the same position as you are in now. I bought a CZ as a starter gun, knowing if I liked the Clay Sports I'd need a better gun for the long haul. The CZ was a good gun for the money, I had no issues with mine at all. I looked for several months for that good deal on a used "B" gun, never found one. They were either beat to hell, or were only a few $$$ less than a new one. The CZ served me well and I have no regrets on the purchase. They are not the best balanced/handling guns out there by a long shot, but they do function well. At their price point they are a good deal.
I now shoot a Zoli, it is by far a superior gun in every aspect, but at its price, I couldn't buy one to see if I liked shooting clays. There's nothing wrong with a CZ as an entry level gun...But it IS an entry level gun, and if you get hooked on the Clay sports, you WILL want a better gun later...

Purchased a CZ Canvasback and a Citori Field from a Calgunner, same time transaction. Two trap days and one pheasant hunt later, sold the CZ. Yes, the Citori is that much better.

I have a cz canvasback in 20g and wouldn't hesitate to recommend if you can get a good price. I did have the well documented issue with long firing pins making it difficult to open after firing but cz was great to deal with in getting that fixed. They arranged FedEx to pick it up from my house and I got it back a couple weeks later with the pin issue fixed plus a list of other checks they made on the gun. After that, no issues whatsoever. Cz customer service is one of the biggest reasons I would recommend anything they sell, whether they build it or not.

I do not shoot competitively so I can't say how it would work for that. Mine is exclusively a field gun like all my shotguns. It kills doves and rabbits just as well as my Remington 1100-lt20 though.

Came with 5 chokes which is a touch I appreciate since many companies are really stingy with them. And with a full set of chokes you are set to hunt anything you'd like off the bat plus you can still get aftermarket chokes if you desire something specialized.

I'm not good enough to say whether back boring makes a difference . My non-backbored guns kill things just as dead if I hit them. It seems to be marketing hype to me.

I'd consider stock fit, reputation, and value when choosing a shotgun before I worried about something like that.

CZ is a good value for its price. The resale may not be a good as a citori as a previous seller mentioned. Think of it as a hundyai when you can get honda for a bit more.

So I don't trap shoot and rarely get out to shoot clays. I do however go bird hunting 20-30 times a year. Shoot whatever fits you best. It took me a while to figure this out. Pick it up and point it at stuff you'll know if its right.

I wound up getting a Winchester 101 for $1300 and love it. It kicks hard but I drop 90% of what I point it at.

Dicks has the Franchi Instinct for $999. They're nice looking guns and point well for me. Maybe go check them out too.

Why are you set on an over under? you can get a quality auto for the money and be set.

or you can get a crappy o/u that you will later want to get rid of.

the citoris are stiff from the factory but they get more loose over time obviously. you can also loosen them easily when new by slightly filing the fore end lug with a sharpening stone. tons of stuff on this online. you cant go wrong with a citori and you certainly can get good deals on them used. maybe not on this site, but if you are willing to have it shipped great deals can be had.

Everyone has an opinion. Here's mine. Buy the best you can afford and don't look back. A lot of people will tell you to buy a used Citori, as apparently they are in abundance for around $1k or less. I hit the gun shows and gun shops pretty hard. Rarely do you find a used Citori for sale; and if you do, it may not be the right model for your intended purpose. Buy what you can afford and upgrade later if the need arises or you inherit some money.

I just bought my second CZ. Great gun for the money. Customer support is excellent. I have a 20ga mallard for sale. Sale pending but if it falls through and your interested let me know. $400 shipped to an FFL.
