What is this thing?

I will be getting a (1991?) Mossberg 500A in 10 days or so.

I am new to shotguns so please bear with me.

Inside the rifle bag was this device:



1/4" dowel, 10" long, 2 rubber O-rings and a metal washer in the middle.

I just started looking up cleaning and disassembly/reassembly and downloaded the manual so maybe it is a spare washer?
Just seems like overkill for storage of a washer.

(Too short to be a brown recluse remover.)

I have one. That is what it's for.
Remove the barrel, slip this dowel in the threaded hole, reinstall the barrel. Now limited to 3 rounds in the magazine.

Interesting, the previous owner is my cousin and was not a hunter, but he may have picked it up from a friend who hunted.

It is an 18.5" barrel BTW so my use will be HD and a bit of plinking.

I will ask, maybe there is a spare barrel somewhere at his place.

Mine came with 18" barrel, ribbed 28" barrel, pistol grip, full stock, and that dowel/plug.

Nope, they came from the factory with them. My early nineties 500 Slugster had one.

Shotguns nearly always come with a magazine plug to limit the mag to 3 rounds, sometimes installed, sometimes not. Whether someone decides to use it is a different story. Likely it came with the gun and was not something your cousin had to purchase separately.

Looks like the same type that comes automatically with Mossberg shotguns.

For people who aren't hunters,

there are laws and regulations in certain countries, states, counties, that limit how many rounds you can have in your magazine when you go hunting, whether it be with a rifle or shotgun.

I was disapointed when my 7 shot Maverick didn't come with one. lol It would be pretty long though.

The plug limits the magazine capacity to 2 rounds. The Federal capacity limit for hunting migratory birds is 3 rounds (which includes the round in the chamber).
