Question about pistol gripped shotguns

I remember reading a few weeks/months ago that you have to be 21 to buy or possibly possess a pistol gripped shotgun.

Now, I may have been having a nightmare, but I'm not sure.

So is anyone aware of a law; federal or state, regarding shotguns that are pump or semi, being illegal to buy or possess by someone under 21 if they have a pistol grip?

Well, that isn't that bad.

I then suppose it is kosher to have the seller take the PG off, mail it to me, send the non gripped but otherwise converted S 12 to the dealer, and DROS it like normal?

I did a search and found conflicting info on this. Can someone point me to the regulation that states this? Thanks.

A factory pistol grip only shotgun is not classified as a long gun under Federal law, that is why the age to purchase is 21 or older.

And the reason why, if you shorten the barrel under 18" it becomes an AOW and not a SBS.

Shotguns can be purchased by persons 18 or older and the shotgun can have a pistol grip.

There are also no law preventing a person from installing a pistol grip to a shotgun.
Unless the shotgun is imported into the USA and is a semi-auto, then Federal 922(r) parts compliance needs to be done.

Are you inquiring about a converted Saiga-12?

If so, the pistol grip can remain on the shotgun as long as the Saiga-12 has enough US made parts to comply with Federal 922(r).

Since, it is a shotgun, the age to purchase is 18 or older.

Also, the Saiga-12 needs to have a magazine lock installed on the shotgun prior to being shipped to CA.

Got it. Does not apply to Shotguns with a stock and a pistol grip.

A Saiga 12 transferred into California must have a mag lock device and can have a pistol grip or a folding/telescoping stock but not both.


Pistol grip can stay on for transfer.
