Anyone experience this? Been thinking about getting a Mossberg 500 soon. First I have seen/heard about this problem.

Mossberg 500 flaw

I've dropped my 590a1 countless of times and it never did that. Even from higher heights. Odd.Bounce a ball in Football that's a fumble. Baseball, no bouncing at all. Bounce a ball in Hockey, well that's a mandatory drug test right there...Comment

No one should be surprised. Buy cheap buy often. A 500 is not that much more then a Maverick so anyone buying the Maverick and thinking they are simply getting a cheaper 500 is fooling themselves.JD McGuire, Owner

If you're going to a gun fight, take a shotgun. If you can't take a shotgun, don't go.Comment

I don't think this has deterred me much from wanting a 500. It's the only shotgun I've shot (was in military) and I'm comfortable with it. Just odd that this problem exists. Maybe I'll try to recreate the problem myself when I get mine. Maybe not... I don't think I could bring myself to purposely drop my firearm.Comment

I hunted for 20 years with my Ithaca 37 and I can't recall a time when I dropped it. Yeah it would be awesome to know that all of my guns could be dropped, kicked, fired under water, etc. but none of my HD weapons are ever treated that way.BillComment

There are two differences
1. Forend of maverick is one piece. If you would like to use after market forend, you have to buy a 500 forend slide kit.
2. The safety is different. Therefore trigger assembly is different. Actually I prefer maverick's safety. It is easier to operate with pistal grip.
The rest: stock, barrel, mag tube are all interchangeable.
The only thing I don't like about mossberg 500 is the slide release. It is too short and aftermarket lever is rare.Comment

Thanks for the video. For almost 20 years I've been issued and using the Mossberg 590A1 and didn't know about this. I did try this sideways-drop-test with my 15 year old 590A1 and it did cause the elevator (aka "lifter") to pop out from its pivot point in the receiver as shown in the video.
It will do this loaded or unloaded; bolt forward or back. I only tested by dropping it on the left side where I have a side-saddle mounted, as the side-saddle obscures the view of the left-side pivot point.
With the bolt open or back, I was able to wiggle the elevator to get the pivot point back into place. With the bolt forward, I got lucky and moving the safety forward moved the elevator enough where its pivot went back into its hole.
All good things to know. My main lesson is to not drop the shotgun on its side (or drop it at all); but if it does occur, I'll know how a jammed bolt feels and what could be causing it; and to look for whether the elevator has popped out of its pivot points.
I may still recommend a 590A1, but I'll also mention this issue to any potential buyer before purchase. Then the potential buyer can make an informed decision prior to purchase.(former) Glock and 1911 Armorer; LEO (now retired)Comment

Never had this issue with a 500 from the early 1990s....
But lots of things can happen.... I wonder if front sight has had this happen with the 590 rental guns....Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED
Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)
Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET
Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT
