Need Advice - Best .410 shells for varmints?

I bought the wife a Rossi .410 Tuffy for Xmas. She wanted something for snakes and varmints around the barn.

We tried it out that morning using 2.5" target shells (Fiocchi - #8 shot).
We were both surprised how LOUD that lil sucker is, and it's got a pretty good kick.
As far as targets, we both missed most everything we aimed at.

Admitted I know little about shells/loads.
What would be my choices for a lower recoil shell and pellet gauge that would be good for varmints?

I assume you are shooting at very close range. What is it choked for ?

Cylinder choke and # 9 shot target load would be my choice. Then pattern the gun with the proper mount and cheek weld to see if it is accurrate for her.

I don't think that you can get much less recoil from a 410. I might suggest using #9 shot instead of #8, but that's simply because there are more pellets using 9's using for snakes. You could use #12 shot, but that'll be tough to find.
For bigger varmints, you will need larger shot, meaning a smaller number. Perhaps #5 or 6 would be appropriate for fox, bobcat and that size. Not sure that you can get much lower than that easily. Otherwise #2 or 00 buck would be more for coyotes and that size game.
Dunno what a Rossi Tuffy is, but it sounds like it's probably a short barrel, synthetic stock, making it lighter, that's why you are feeling more recoil. If you can make it heavier, maybe adding some shot packages inside the stock, that will reduce the felt recoil.

The Tuffy is basically a youth model 410, single shot breach loader.
Plastic stock with a a thru-grip.
She wanted small and that's what she got
That said, the stock is very short and the gun weighs next to nothing.

It appears there are alot of choices for ammo as far as shot size online.
I guess we'll just stick with 7 or 8.
I see there are plastic pellets available for pretty cheap.
Any downside to that?

You should get some paper targets, paper plate, box... etc and see what the gun is doing .... the 410 by nature is a real finicky fellow. Your looking for an even spread of pellets with about an inch between pellets. It will also tell you at what distance the gun is effective.

For shot size ....#6 is a good all around size up to rabbit size game
