Home Defense 870 Kicks Like a Mule

Just a short rant, not expecting it to go any place. I took my Remington 870 HD shotgun to the range today and put five rounds of slug through it. Wow, I had forgotten how badly those slugs kick and I'm not a small guy. Nonetheless, it put five very large holes in the target fairly close to where I aimed and that's good enough for me. FWIW, slugs are not my choice for HD but I like to run them from time to time for training purposes.

My 870 kicks like a mule too, but with slugs and ghost ring sights I can ring steel out to 100 yards with it. I love that shotgun!

My primary is Fed Tac 00buck but I saddle slugs too because "anything can happen".

Someone mentioned to me about low powered slugs that he uses in competition. Havent really looked into that but just a tidbit. Piston shotguns also soak up alot of the kick. My M4 shoots 1600fps maybe 3-5x softer than my M2 field.

Put the buttstock firmly into your shoulder and it will be far more manageable.
If it hurts you didn't do that and the rifle is putting itself into your shoulder when you fire it.

Lots of us out there shoot 12g all the time without complaint - just something to think about.

Just shoot a box of 3" magnum buck before you shoot the 2.75" slugs... It will feel like a .22!
It was just an old plywood boat, with a '75 Johnson, with electric choke. A young boy, two hands on the wheel, I can't replace the way it made me feel.

Be glad you don't have that recoil stock. Feels like your 870 punches you in the face.

It only works well when the target and shooter are stationary with the target right in front of the shooter.

The first time I tried this when I was new to my shotgun, it bruised my shoulder pretty good. It was the Winchester SuperX 3" magnum 00 buckshot with 15 pellets, got it from Walmart.

I keep a box of it for anti-riot use, in case some minority group tries to loot my neighborhood. It throws out a lot of projectiles with a single shot and it also extremely intimidating with very loud BANG report.

For slugs, I like using those low recoil Rio Star at are loaded at only 1200fps. I shoot those at the range for fun. The higher velocity stuff I shoot a few once in a while but the recoil makes them unpleasant after a while. I'm using a Benelli Supersport, inertia driven system, so felt recoil is more than gas piston based shotgun. I might try getting a gas piston HD shotgun somewhere down the line, maybe a M4, and see if it works better for high velocity slugs.

                          Endine Hydraulic buffer.
                          Expensive but works great.
I have a shoulder injury was causing temporary numbness if I wasn't spot on when shouldering the shotgun. The hydraulic buffer reduces recoil substantially.

Even my 5' ish wife will shoot slugs all day now whereas with a standard 870 she dreads her department quals.

The 1600 velocity rounds kick nice and firm. The 1200 is actually manageable for rapid fire. Shoulder it nice and firm to avoid any bruises!

Maybe its how you shoulder it. It shouldnt be as bad as a mule kicking you.

I have a 20g topper. Now that thing kicks harder than any pump/semi auto i ever shot! Has a bird fly over. I aimed high and took the shot. In the heat of the moment, i had brought the stock up to my collar bone....felt like i got hit by a linebacker. Haha. Fun!
