Buying a range rental Browning O/U

I checked out the pro shop at sporting clays range today. They had 3 used Browning white Lighting 12ga O/Us for sale, 2 of them were $800 and 1 was $900. That was about $1000 off retail. All three rifles were former range rental guns and cosmetically they weren't the prettiest.

Normally I prefer to buy used guns because I can save a few bucks. But I'm hesitant this time because they were rental guns that probably saw a lot of action.

What do you guys think? I was planning to buy an O/U in the $1500 range brand new. But the price on these Brownings are appealing. Would I be taking to big a risk on buying a rental gun?

when people use things that isn't theirs they tend to abuse them. If the action is still tight and everything locks up with a click then maybe, but if it feels sloppy and loose especially around the action then i would say no.

      ><

It all depends on condition and how well you can access condition.

Cracks in wood, checkering damage, dented barrels, how far from a action rebuild is the breech......etc

Check out Midwest Gun Works for a list of repair costs ....then judge if its still a good deal

Please forgive me if this incorrect, but an O/U mechanism should be cared for, so no I couldn't buy a likely abused range rental unless it was insanely discounted or I wanted a beater gun.
Untold number of people slamming the action closed and mishandling it would bother me to no end, I'd rather put that money towards a nice Beretta instead.

You guys are probably right. I'd hate to spend money on a money pit. It might cost me more in the long run.

I don't think used guns are like used cars... but these shotguns probably saw a lot of action.

Which range...if it was Coyote...I probably put a few thousand thru them...

When I finally got tired of rentals I bought a Franchi Instinct SL and the difference is amazing...

I would think buying used from a private party where you knew shell count would probably be better...the rentals probably got cleaned once a week...if that.
Wilson Protector .45, Springer 9mm Loaded, Franchi Instinct SL .12ga. and some other cool stuff for the kiddos...

I would be curious about brand new O/U guns for $1,500. What band and where are they?

Right now Bass Pro has a Browning O/U for $1499 or a Winchester for $1099.

No, but rental guns are like rental cars. Used by people that don't have a vested interest in taking care of them.

Too much for a used rental fleet (if they look like the typical used rental guns).

I have access to a like new Citori Lightning with some extra Briley (invector+) chokes for <$1200. I've been debating getting it yself but I don't really need another 12g O/U.

After having time to think about I'm pretty much over the idea of buying a rental gun.

I'll keep saving money and keep my eyes on the Calguns market place.

I would consider buying a rental gun. Its all about condition. These guns are built to last a lifetime. I would check them out. I would go handle a new gun, getting a handle on how a solid gun should feel, then go check out the used guns. If everything is tight, and the cosmetics meet your standards, then they sound like reasonable deals. I would think there has to be info on the net to give you some direction on how to evaluate the a used o/u shotgun. There not particularly complicated. Good luck

Consider this, a privately owed shotgun gets shot once a week or so (less if it's one of you guys ). However a rental gun gets shot multiple times a week, by someone that may or may not know what they're doing, and someone that may or may not care about the condition of the gun.
