    Remington 870 Express

Alright...I have an 870 express and I need to do some modifications on it. It has the 28 inch barrel and I don't duck hunt, ha. If I had to do it again, I wouldn't have bought it but it's too late. I have had it for years.

I like the way the tactical version looks - mine will mainly be used for home defense and just another shotgun to collect dust, ha! Any suggestions?

Sell 28" barrel and get slug barrel with sights for tactical use.

I have a 870 28" it is a huge B*&^^. I found a 18.5 barrel for $100 here on the forums, that and removing the wood furniture for a synthetic set.

      For $120 I have 2 870's no =o) a 18.5 HD and a 28" duck blaster if the time ever presents itself.

If HD will be it's only use. I agree, sell the 28" barrel and buy an 18.5" (smooth or rifled) your choice. I'd go smooth bore so that I could shoot 00Buck as well as slugs.

Make sure you clean & shoot it enough to break it in, and be dependable! Last thing you want for HD is a dry dusty gun that's.....questionable.

Offer it (or the barrel) up for a trade to someone that bought a tactical model that now realizes it's to short for shooting trap/skeet.

Or, get the hacksaw out and shorten it up. Just remember to keep it legal length!

If you cut it a) cut it so that you don't have a section of rib just hanging out on top of the barrel over the cut. b) figure out how you're going to put a new beed on it.

There are so many used HD shotguns out there. I picked up a Win 1200 Defender for 180. I am sure you could get 300 express if it's clean. I hate to see gold field guns get jacked up when the used racks are full of HD shotguns.

Not really a need for a bead on a 18.5" barrel.

Cheapest place to buy a 18.5" barrel from is direct from Remington Customer Service.

Keep both barrels that was it wont just collect dust.
You can actually shoot trap or skeet with it.

If you shoot both slugs and shot that bead and your eyeball/cheek weld is the only sighting system you have while shooting slugs, and rifle sights clutter your view when using shot. I like a bead, even on short barrels.

Or bandsaw if you got one.

                          Don't get a slug barrel, they're rifled.

I love Remington rifle sights, super easy to use. But if you can even find them for sale, they'll cost you a fortune.

A bead kit from Brownells, including a drill bit and tap, is like 12 bucks.

I would say just keep the longer barrel and buy a short one. You can use the longer barrel for trap/skeet/sporting clay shooting, which is a good way to keep in practice with the shotgun.
